Who doesn't have to change their exhaust?

#1

I realized that almost everybody has to change their exhaust to meet the new 2008 rule, I figured it might be easier to ask:

Who doesn’t have to change their exhaust to meet this rule?

#2

Has the change been finalized?

I thought it was just in negotiations??

I will be changing it. :S

#3

it hasn’t been finalized yet, and there is already a thread where people listed what config they have so not sure this thread is too useful (just MHO)

My exhaust is to the proposed specs already except my muffler is where the catalytic converter used to be instead of where the old muffler was. So the short answer is no I won’t be changing my exhaust.

#5

Mine is to the spec as far as size and config, I think I will have to add on a longefr glassback, not sure about how the bends are…

As I understand it the majority of the cars will have to change, I figured it would be easier to see if anyone didn’t have to change, it sounds like we have two(2) "maybe nots" - ie. they may not have to change depending on how the spec is written.

#7

I don’t have to change mine, it is single 2.25" pipe.

#8

Mine is good to go from last year… Finally, something goes right!!

Exhaust system by "Bob’s Garage".

#9

I don’t have to change mine - I think - like Ken N. my glasspack is where the cat used to be.

#10

I was about to have the exhaust built for my E30, but I’m on hold until this gets finalized (please sort this out soon :stuck_out_tongue: the stock exhaust on my car is way to quite)

ken,
did you do that to make it look like a CAT for the street emissions inspection or just because it seemed like a good place to put it (more protected I bet)
thanks,
bruce

Mine is OK.
I placed a resinator or glass pack where the cat was and a simple muffler in the original place.

#13

FWIW, id prefer a street legal (or apparently legal ;)) option as well.

You bring up a good quandry - what do street legal racecars do?

Bruce,
Since my car is strictly track use only there was no reason other than it fit very nicely in place of the old cat and I had originally had another muffler in the factory location. I recently removed it so I left the resonator where it was.

I thought that the current rules stated that the muffler had to be in the stock muffler location

The answer to that depends in part on what state the car is registered in. If it happens to a state that does inspections the car will have to meet what ever standards are imposed. That could require operable catalytic converters and a street legal (w/respect to noise) muffler.

If the proposed spec exhaust is adopted those folks will have to do an exhaust swap at least to pass inspection and may have to do a swap as a part of a race weekend.

If they drive the car to the track they’ll have to swap it at the track?!?!?

Don’t worry Jim, this only applies to one car. Perhaps this will keep him from giving candy to the kids.
