Starting our newest project

#1

We picked up our very own E30 to build for this wonderful series. Massive amounts of write-ups/work will have to wait until the cast comes off my hand (I took a heatshield to a tendon…)

Scott and I will be sharing the car in the upcoming season.

More info will be posted here:

Congratulations ! Car looks like solid platform to start with.

awesome - the recent spec e30 article seems to have generated a lot of awareness so this build series should be great.

BTW, Per, Bimmerhaus/Jim Leithauser will be putting in my cage this winter so if there is any thing that might compliment your story I know they will be happy to cooperate as they have in the past.
cheers,
bruce

Yo Per

I am seriously o-fended that yall didn’t get the donor car from me…I have an 85 318 POS that was vandalized…I would have even thrown in a live possum or maybe a chicken or two.

And let me know what you need for the Alfa project!

Reverend ALonzo Graham Taylor III esq. etc.

#5

ohh nice, BBS RS wheels? for sale haha? Glad to see you are building a spec E30 and can’t wait to see it completed! Good luck.

#6

Those wheels are choice. Congrats on the new project and thanks for the exposure. I look forward to reading about the progress. '07 is gonna be a blast.

#7

Sorry Reverend, I think any 'Possum that I sourced from you would be too emotionally traumatized to be of any use in the shop.

This should be a fun project. I’m actually in the process of tagging/insuring it now so it can be easy to transport around town for work.

#8

Awesome, I figured you guys would be building one of these for a project car sooner rather than later. 07 is going to be an awesome year. I pick up my donor car this weekend from Kentucky. Per:

It’s good to have you guys join Spec E30. I enjoyed speaking with Tim, Bill, and Scott, at Mid Ohio and look forward to seeing you guys on the track this coming season.

While many Spec E30 racers have chosen bright colors, are you going to follow suit or do you have other plans?

Spec E30 Administrator

ps. Carlton and I (and others I hope) are planning to race in Florida in '07 so let’s make sure we do the same weekend.

Maybe after it gets its first damage. It’s clean enough for now!

Nice color Simon.

Spent some time on Saturday on the scales:

Its interesting seeing the weight reduction as you remove things from the car. In hindsight I would have left the 50 pounds of sound deading/ballast in the trunk in my car. It helps to make weight and keep the car balance closer to 50/50. I ended up having to keep a spare tire in and a full tank of gas to make weight.

I would have left my trunk mats in too.

Funny, that’s what I was thinking today when I started looking around at what you guys have gotten for weight and ballast. Search first, then remove!

Actually, I needed to remove the mats anyway to stop some rust that was starting at the back edge of the trunk. I wonder if those mats have a factory part number and could be ordered?

How messed up is that?

On the plus side, our cage will be pretty stout, as I want to run sill bars in addition to the X and a few extra braces and gussets for safety (not performance).

Thats kinda scary I better hit the donut shop! I have already scraped out all the sound deadening and it is at McMahons in Ohio right now getting ready for the cage. I only weigh 150lbs so I might have to run the spare tire which I really didn’t want to do. Wish I hadn’t gone crazy with the heat gun and scraper

just call them back and tell them you want to add some more bars to the cage design.

We are still finalizing the design but the added bars would have to be for safety so there is only so much you can do. One thing that I did think of is that I will be having fully functional windows since I have an open trailer so I’ll have some extra weight in the doors.

My car still has the working window on the passenger side and I bent a hook to hold up the driver side window for open trailer travel.

Simple.
