I’ve got a race car with power windows, too! Silly, but necessary.

me too. I only weigh in at ~120lbs so… we need all the weight we can get. The power windows are kinda nice especially when your sitting on grid at mid-ohio and yellow jackets swarm your car!
Q re: windows
The rules say you can remove the window and it’s guts entirely, but do not allow for replacing the power units with manual ones.
Power windows in a race car are, well, stupid.
From a cost and safety perspective, I think replacing the power units with manuals would make sense, at least for the front windows on a 4 dr. It’s no fun being at the track and getting ready to go to the grid and finding your motor/switch has decided to take a crap on you. I have one dead window motor in my car and am not eager to waste money buying another one, when the little crank version I got for it works the same or better.
Comments?
(Yeah, I know, rules creep, but I despise power windows)
There’s no question that power windows in a race car are stupid…but these are really street cars prepared for racing, thus the need to keep some street parts in the car.
Regarding your dead window lift, that’s the first we’ve heard about. If it gets to be a problem for several drivers, we’ll look at it.
Personally, I like my power passenger window. When strapped-in, I can wait to the last minute to put the window down if it’s raining and I can raise it back up on the cool down lap. I can also lower it if I forget to do it in the paddock. Not that I’ve ever done that.

ps. The corner worker sign for "put down your passenger window" is a cranking motion with one arm.
Interesting stuff…I was going to replicate Per’s trunk cleaning efforst but now maybe I’ll wait.
Working power windows. Why not? Is anyone racing with working A/C? That might come in handy in the deep south.

In my E30 (and my E24) the anemic A/C functions/ed as an inverse-supercharger – press the button and lose 15hp throughout the range. :side:
I still have it on my e30 M3 racecar but I’ve removed it on my spec e30.
It is definitely nice while sitting on the grid, but then you have to remember to shut it off …

We stripped out a majority of the interior yesterday. Pic and weights on the website. Dash and sunroof come out next weekend. Any tricks to removing the dash for a cage install?
Also, the rules state "heating and cooling system interior ducts" Does this include the plenum and that big box behind the controls? That’s about exactly where I’d want to put a knee bar.
edit: sounds like the A/C system and heating system is fair game, except for the heater core itself…So, how do people handle this bit, anybody have pictures?

Dash removal suggestion…Remove the window first. This will provide easy interior access for you and your cage builder. If I recall correctly there are two 10mm bolts on each side that hold the dash to the A pillar/side of door frame. There is also a big support bracket on the driver’s side of the transmission tunnel. Assuming that all of the other goober panels on the passenger side are disconnected an thrown in the trash, you remove the bolts and wiggle, look for obstructions and wiggle…I’m short on details, but without knowing how much disassembly you have already done it is difficult to jump in. However, there is an internet write-up on the entire process, but I cannot find my paper back-up with the address. Chuck Taylor provided it to me some while ago. Chuck, can you help? Regards, Robert Patton

Run the dash bar across the two deep metal flanges that stick out from the dash. It will clear everything. See pic here:

All the cars we’ve built have retained the heater box (the way we read the rule, you had to retain the plenum) FWIW, If you plug the hole the A/C core came out of the heat will still work even w/o the hoses to the ducts. Nice to have semi-defrost and heat on the cold racedays. We guessed the plastic surrounds and fan didn’t weight much compared to the core and kept them.

Another dash bar image if you’re interested. Everything installed great afterwards:

Are right side nets going to be required now?
That’s a good question.
I’m checking my seat, harnesses, and window net to make sure they are all not outdated.
Carter
yes, by July 1, 2007 you either have to have a right side net or a seat with large side helmet bolsters - check out the 2007 CCR (the normal CCR link on the left column links to it)
cheers,
