SpecE30 in PT?

#1

What Performance Touring class would a spec e30 car be in?

Just curious because we will have our own run group this year so us Nor-Cal folk can run in 2 race groups.

PTE. It’s a good group too because a lot of the SMs run in PTE too. It will be like racing them twice each day. I think SM gets a supersize $$ deal for racing Group E and also PTE/Group A. Maybe we could talk to Jerry about getting the same.

AJ…you must be clairvoyant…I got an email yesterday from Jerry where he said he is going to include SpecE30 with the “supersize” option. This would give the drivers an extra four sessions per weekend, for less than $200. Stand by for a formal announcement.

Cheers,
Scott

OK…it’s official
Supreme Leader Jerry K sent me an email announcing the “Supersize” option for SpecE30 Racers. This option allows us to not only race in Group E but also as a PT car in Group A for an additional fee. SpecE30 cars would class out as PTE so you would be racing against Miatas, Pro7s etc. For more info on Performance Touring see: http://www.performancetouring.com

This option gives Group E racers an extra four sessions per weekend (2 additional quals and 2 additional races), for less than $200. For Infineon, Norcal is running a special: $159 for the supersize option. The Supersize option will be available when registering for our normal SpecE30 Group E race event.

A spec e30 at minimum weight on R888s runs in PTD. I found that out the hard way…

A spare tire, and a ten pound weight in the trunk, boom PTE/TTE

It would be interesting to be allowed to sign up for both Lightning and Thunder for a single weekend at some discounted price.

Unless you have (had) an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator, lsd differential on an “i” car, etc. It adds up to be more ballast than you can fit in our cars.

School me on the PTE vs PTD argument.

I share my car with two other drivers. So I may take one for the team and run PTE next year. But I want to make sure I’m legal. The way I read the PT rules for 2009, you would want to take the Competition Weight Reduction points. The base weight for the E30 325 lists the car in PTF @ 2855lbs. Min weight with driver for SE30 is 2750. Say your car is at Min weight, then you’d take +7 points for competition weight. When I add up the remaining points I show PTE. There’s also wording around running a narrower tire than the class “base”. PTE shows a 235mm tire is legal without a points increase.

Per PT Rules:
Drivers choosing to use tires narrower than the size
listed for their base class may get credited back points by reversing the assessments listed
above using the smaller decrease of front or rear for cars using split sizes (i.e. -1 for 10mm
smaller, -4 for 20mm smaller, -7 for 30mm smaller, etc.)
15

Since we run a 205 for SE30, we may be allowed a credit towards the +7 points for the R888’s. Or this may be negated by using the Comp Weight Method. I dunno…

Again, I may be missing something, so please feel free to learn me some PTE. Thx!

I was able to just clear TTE by adding weight. Remember you have to take points for any is parts, and the lsd.

It really was quite simple. Add up the points you’d have, then calculate how much weight you need to add to stay in PTE. For me it was around 45 lbs. My stock weave weighted in at 36 lbs, so I just bolted it along with a 10 lb weight in the trunk. I also didn’t run a strut bar

If it came stock on the car like the LSD on the iS, it is not assessed points.

And the ballast has been expanded this year to 250# and location is free.

I have an Excel calculator, will update with 2009 points and post it here for y’all.

Here’s a little file I created last year, looks like PTE with no points to spare at 2750# but please check my math as I just went through the 09 rules and updated the spreadsheet with the changes and could easily have missed something. It’s an advantage to just run the alternate weight method, and if you normally run a little heavy you might have a little wiggle room on points.

#13

OK, I get an error that I can only upload certain types, one of which is XLS but it won’t let me. If anyone wants it just PM me your email addy.

#14

What I mean to say is that you can run an identical car in SE30 and PTE, but if you maximize the SE30 rules (strut bar, etc., etc.) you are going to have to be swapping a ton of ballast. For me it was going to be something like 80+ lbs. just to be legal. It didnt help that the other cars had ~50 more hp. so being competitive at certain tracks would be impossible. But it’s still track time… even if you finish last everytime.

Straight from the horses mouth: Jeff England SE TT director

“you will have to take the aero points. TT takes the base model and adds all the OEM upgrades (as a Vette guy I got killed)…”

I think I posted this for you in my other thread. all cars are classed on the base model so for us the 325i, which did not come stock with a limited slip, or rear spoiler, and in my case since I have an 87 no is front valance. These are points you have to take to be completely legal. Put it is still possible to class into E.

Moving into D would make you even less competitive so unbolting strut bars, and adding weight is worth it. With APR and intake rule being changed for this year you really have a fully built SpecE30 just without strut bars and a little heavy.

That sounds familiar now, thanks 87. When I built this spreadsheet it was for a first gen RX-7 / Pro7 car and there was no base model issues to remember.

Given that, I wonder how the SMs are running in PTE here in Norcal - their base class for the 1.6 motors is PTF** (same as us), and the 1.8s are all PTE. The SM buildup is surely worth more than 26 points, especially considering the torsen lsd was not in the base model.

I guess whatever it is here in Norcal, those of us that run PT will probably be running together anyway and that’s the fun of it.

Thanks Laz to Laz and Ranger for the tips to get the xls up here. It’s now on Google docs http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pVNy2Cd-GJHm4EpPTVzLhNg&hl=en

#17

that is correct, also base class for e30 is PTF, which means tires size is 215, which means you can deduct 1 one point for 205s you guys run

robert allen ran PTE last year but fuel pressure regulator, from air dam and r888 being 7 points instead of 5 points ra1s were made it hard for him to stay in pte

although fuel pressure reg is no longer legal for you guys so that saves some points, a combination of weight and/or RA1s should let you guys in PTE, your cars make similar power 155whp approx as do our sentras and run similar lap times so it should work out ok for those that run both (or dont want to race on toyos

Wonder if we can get the National office to just say any legal SpecE30 car = PTE and be done with it as no one is going to be winning PTE in a legal SpecE30 car.

#20

I do agree that we should be automatically fit into a PT group but dont doubt the SpecE30 cars and drivers. I briefly lead a field of 8 PTE cars on the last lap at hyperfest in a SE30 with extra ballast. I only finished 4th in the SE30 race…
