SCCA E30?

#1

I thought I heard a rumor somewhere that the SCCA was coming out with a SpecE30 rule set that was identical or really close to NASA. Anybody know anything about that? Is there an SCCA class where a SpecE30 will run competitively? I’m not giving up NASA, but the SCCA in my region is huge, and I would like to run some of their events, if it can be done competitively.

Maybe regional only series?

I’m not sure why anyone would want to run regional SCCA races. Aside from the fact that SCCA seems to be dying, I doubt you would have any competition, much less any sort of contingency. If one was to run SCCA, it would only make sense to run nationals.

SCCA regionals are huge where I am from. I mean absolutely huge. Plus, they run Daytona, Sebring, Homestead and some other cool venues. I’d like to go run with them from time to time.

#5

Is this even a class outside of the Rocky Mountain division?

ITS

Reading the rule set, it is what the NASA rules should be.

Yes, you can race in ITS but you will need “R” compound tires to be remotely competitive.

SCCA racers tend to be a little more serious about the whole racing weekend but you will find the same camaraderie and beer consumption as a NASA weekend.

And yea, tracks that NASA does not run.

Right now the only place for SpecE30 in the SCCA - SE is the Carolina Cup, they have adopted the SpecE30 rules. SpecE30 cars can’t run against a good ITS car, and there are too many changes to go back and forth. The heater core must be in the car to run ITS and most of the cars I run don’t have the heater core. SCCA is not dying, both organizations are a great place to race, with plus and minus in both camps. I personally would love to race my SpecE30 in SCCA, and would push to get them included, but feel that not many cars would come out.

#9

For what it’s worth, full tilt ITS builds are more like Pro3 cars. It would be tough to make a SE30 even remotely competitive even in ITA.

#10

If SCCA really wants SpecE30 cars to cross over, why don’t they do the guest class thing like BMW CR started a few years back. Likely won’t get a lot of participation but at least those who do know they aren’t totally wasting their time.

#11

I don’t think this is being pushed by SCCA. God knows they have enough classes already. This is an effort by BigKeyserSoze to spread the love.

#12

I noticed that the San Francisco region has a SE30 class too. SE30 makes so much sense, and with SCCA entries waning, why not have SE30? It’s probably one of the least expensive cars to build and fun to drive. Best thing to do is write letters.

#13

SCCA autox rules are a hate crime against the e30. I doubt they would ever allow an e30 to be competitive against anything. The only reason I would be interested in SCCA anymore is that they run at Road America, which is the closest track to me.

#14

Yes, it sure seems that the SCCA is biased on their rules when it comes to BMW. Look at the results in the National Runoffs, only one BMW in the top three of any class. In regional events the ITR class has beemers running in the front.
So again, why not a spec e30 class? Then there’s no griping from those racing another brand. Spec e30 just makes sense.

#15

First, like NASA there are too many classes. Second, SCCA already has a class where the e30 can be competitive…ITS. A good Spec E30 with Hoosiers can run top 5 in most any region in SCCA…add Skeen and a chip and you have a podium (any spot) combination. Try it…you’ll like it.

#16

With respect to the chip there are so many choices. Does anyone have a preference/recomendation? As far as Skeen, that’s like trying to find unobtainium in a hardware store, much more difficult to come by.
The IT classes are certainly a bit more generous than the Spec class.

heres a list of things not legai in spec e30 that are in ITS

Forged Pistons
any exhaust header you want (ie. burns stainless)
any exhaust you want
chiped or after market ecu ( IE , mega squirt or motec)
any shock/ dampner you want excludeing external res. ie Moton’s
any springs you want
suspension material is free
any diff you want ( cough cough 4.10)
modified LSD 's

#18

Forged pistons…NASA legal, same weight, .020 over max., etc.

Header… perhaps 4-5hp over Spec

Chip…Turner, Bimmerworld, Dianan = easy button

If you don’t think there are rebuilt shocks running in spec, shame on you.

Spec springs are very close…within 50# of what I run

Suspension material…NASA and SCCA = same

Not a 4.1…4.27:evil:

Modified LSD…you mean you don’t have one? Shame on you.

#19

I’d be bumming if people were really rebuilding shocks and the like. Same with the modified LSD…

#20

Yep! And I have a hard time believing that forged pistons meet factory specifications. Weight, etc.
