Progress on the new car

#1

As most of yall know, my old black spec e30 #2 was totalled at VIR, an unlucky hit on its soft spot did in the "expendable" car. I have started work on the replacement, a red 87 2 door. So far the interior is out including the dash, the sunroof is out and the bead is getting welded in it tomorrow. I am also having a front subframe/ swaybar mount done tomorrow. Hopefully before I leave for RA the drivetrain will be out so I can start cleaning up the engine compartment. As far as the donor, I have the roll cage mostly out and am ready to cut the nose off to make pulling the drivetrain easier. I am thinking about having a workday/cookout/beerfest at the VIR house maybe saturday after next. I will have to see how the progress is and if I can get organized enough that we can accomplish something, hopefully I will be ready for a drivetrain install. I will keep yall posted.

You need to have that car ready to roll in time for Roebling at the end of Sept.

I can’t help on the 18th but I could help on the 25th. Let me know…

Al:

I’d be willing to turn a wrench with you but we’re at Summit Point with NASA Mid Atlantic that weekend.

If you reschedule, let us know.

I’d love to come and drink beer and heckle you guys while you work.

The 25th would be better for me too.

Scott’s right, you have definetly earned a BeerWreck sticker!

I will probably be up there both weekends…definate yes on the test run thru Milton…This car is going to be ready for the nationals, believe it or not. Unlike 99% of my fellow amuricans I have no wife, job, mortgage, car payment, kids, dogs, medications, etc etc. so I can focus my considerable energy on this car. Please note the Beertech sticker was applied before the wreck.

If he could finish a race without spinning he might have a shot at a new sticker…

Al took the slogan First or Last to heart.

Al, if you change your mind and decide to fix the old #2, here’s a fascinating thread on BF about replacing the entire front clip on an E30. If you have the patience to read the whole thing, there’s a lot of great photos and comments that illuminate how these things go together (and come apart)

I’m ready to help on the 25th, but we’re gonna be in NY visiting my Grandma on the 18th. I’ll make sure to order the "Weird Al" breakfast plate at the diner in your honor…

Waitress: do you want sausage or bacon with that?

WA: yep

Waitress: link or patty, regular or canadian?

WA: yep

This just before this huge plate shows up with Pancakes, bacon, canadian bacon, link sausage, patty sausage, and home fries. I think Al said he was on an all-pork diet to help support the NC economy…

YUM! B)

I couldn’t stop reading this, this thread is awesome. Pict’s through the whole process. I almost feel like I could do that after reading that whole thing. Id need a lot more tools and an actual garage wouldn’t hurt I’m sure. Working on sand is BUNK!!!

Agreed- it’s a very good thread.

Thing is, there’s nothing exceptionally difficult about most bodywork- but to get it 100% right, you have to REALLY know what you’re doing AND take the time to do it right. Having that frame puller with the correct E30 jig certainly doesn’t hurt either!! I think most people just sort of eyeball stuff like that and it comes out tweaked if it’s not pulled straight.

I think they kind of glossed over how much prep was required to get the donor front clip prepared- I’ll bet they drilled out 1000 spot welds. Once you get the 2 pieces trimmed to properly match up, then sticking them together is just a matter of re-doing the 1000 spot welds and making sure things stay lined up.

Plans forSaturday:

Take Cyl head off donor motor, install rebuilt head, timing belt, seals, flywheel and clutch, seal up trans, mate engine and tranny and install in rolling shell.

I need someone to bring a tourque wrench…

We will be eating brats and drinking beer during the day and then will top it off with Aunt Millies Pizza at the end of the day, I will be buying.

This may be a learning experiance for some, including me as I have never change a cyl head…Rigmaster can you make it to provide guidence??
