Not positive what is legal but I think you’ll find you are allowed to disconnect the bars. I think most people would disconnect the rear bar in the rain. I wouldn’t worry about it too much I suck in the rain with either setup
Nationals 2008
Dont want to expose setup info but I know of some high ranking NASA official/racers that have been known to disconnect the bar in the rain.

Are you saying you believe it is NOT legal to disconnect the front bar because it is “non-adjustable” per the rules?
I think common sense would dictate that it is OK, but common sense often gets left behind when drafting/interpreting/parsing the rules.
I’ve never just disconnected one bar in the rain. Something new to try, I suppose…

We had a thread about this a while back. I think that the consensus was that your bars need to be connected under normal circumstances. But maybe in the rain the rear could get disconnected and folks wouldn’t get too excited. That being said, the informal agreements that develop over time that a Regional Director deems acceptable, don’t necessarily apply to Nationals. And of course the rule of thumb is that if the book doesn’t explicitly say that you can, then you can’t.

Do you guys disconnect your sway bars in the rain? If not, is it because you don’t think the rules permit it or is the car soft enough with the bars in place?
I don’t know if I am torturing the rules, but the bar is required. But it doesn’t say it has to be connected.
The end links from the bar manufacturer are permitted (i.e. not required) but I think the intent of that rule is to allow the replacement of the stock links.
I also think I need to get to a race track before I drive myself crazy.

FWIW I’ve never disconnected my rear swaybar in the rain.
Ok so if it rains how many people are going to be on RA1 rains? :woohoo: Looks like i’ll be on slicks. :S

who would want to disconnect the front bar?
from the rules, it looks to me like disconnecting the rear bar is perfectly legal…

Shaved to 4/32 R888 are not that bad unless there is a ton of standing water.

Right back at ya - why would you NOT want to disconnect the front bar?
In an effort to soften the car up on both ends, I would think you would want to disconnect both bars.
If you soften the rear bar (or REALLY soften it by disconnecting:P), more of the “anti-sway” work has to be done by the front bar. This causes the front to reach its traction limit sooner. Making the car ‘tight’ is not exactly what I am trying to accomplish in the rain.
But I’ve only raced in the rain in a Miata. We unhook both bars and it works well. Just trying to learn what works well for the E30.

PS - Full tread ArrrrrAteyAtes for me in the rain. I guess I’ll have to scrub the mold release off 'em on test day.

Scrub in your rains…it would be a good idea

could be a difference in driving style and/or setup preference…i prefer not to have a loose car in the rain and prefer to be able to put power done as soon and efficiently as possible (softer rear helps this)
ideally you would soften up the springs and shocks all the way around (obviously not applicable here) and, in my experience, soften or remove the rear bar (as needed to tweak the setup)…as with any car though, it’s best to test each setup to figure out what works best for you…
