GRM running low on ink?
haha… seems like everyone is pissed at grm lately… for not printing their name or pic. i guess they can’t be all things to everyone. Roundel (the real race mag as you claim) did print Mikes name already as far as I remember. best advice is for Mike to take an ad out in GRM
you are in position as i am. i am building spec e-30 car. may not get on track til 2010, but im coming. akard might give me some of those champion freebies. look forward to meeting you someday. joe
Did anyone submit this story or results to GRM? If it’s not submitted, the chances of it being in print are pretty slim. It’s not like they have paid staff at every race.
I addressed this on the GRM message board, but I see it’s popped up here as well; we often have to cut down name lists in event results for space reasons, and Mike wasn’t the only one who got clipped from Brian’s original story. I assure you, it wasn’t an intentional slight. I wish I could tell you that we research the life story behind every single name in event coverage, but it’s simply not possible. As I said on our board, Every race has dozens of stories like this throughout the field, and while we can’t fit them all in the magazine, this message board is a great place to share them. Thanks for letting us all know about Mike’s performance this year, and best of luck to you both in 2009.

for opening an ugly can of worms.

[quote]I am still confused, as to who decides on content to be published in GRM. It seems to me, that if you are truly about grass roots motorsports, you would delete some of that crap about the 2008.00 challenge. Who really cares that a group of gearheads can build a junkyard wars car, for under that price. Maybe you should consider using some of those wasted pages, to feature some true racers, instead of salvage yard scavenger hunt junkies. I, unfortunately, received as a gift from Mike Akard, a 10 year subscription to GRM. And I believe you did have a track reporter at event.
To put it in a nutshell, focus more on racing and drivers, and less on scrapping together hunks of junkyard junk. No wonder GRM is about to file bankruptcy. Rumor has it that Roundel is propping you guys up. Someone needs to kick your crutch.

That might be a little harsh. Media types aren’t exactly standing in line begging to bring publicity to our hobby. GRM had a whole series of articles about SpecE30 last year. I think GRM has given NASA in general and SpecE30 in particular more coverage than anyone else. Was there anyone else?
If we start treating GRM poorly, we’ll end up with nothing but SpecMiata articles.
If someone else thinks they have a better idea for a magazine for our flavor of amateur racing, they’re welcome to get started on their own mag.
GRM makes business decisions on what does and does not seem to interest their readers. Maybe we can grant that they have more experience in figuring out what kind of stuff interests folks.
um…2008 challenge is a GRM event, so they sorta got to cover it, ditto UTC which is back at VIR this year. GRM/CM are the best car magazines produced in the US
Sorry Mikes name got left out.

+1
I’ve only met him a couple times, but Scott seems like a good guy. Great coverage of NASA nationals. Even a photo of some goofball who won a spec miata engine. I assume the others at GRM are decent guys like him.
I dare say there are more folks reading that magazine with the scratch to put a $2008 contender together than a $2008-per-weekend race budget. Maybe I am wrong.

Joedapro must be the Michael Phelps look alike who was doing those bong hits in SC last fall.
GRM is THE best car mag out there. <period
Not sure where you got the idea that Roundel is somehow “propping them up”. Roundel has a very narrow focus- BMW’s (and maybe Mini too). GRM has a much wider focus, and I can’t understand why you’re making a mountain out of this molehill.
All the people that I’ve ever met that are at all affiliated with GRM are true car nuts, they might not all be race drivers, but many are. There are far more people who are car enthusiasts than people who will ever turn a wheel on track, much less have any actual wheel-to-wheel experience.
I also know Mike Akard, and I know he’s a quiet man who can drive the wheels off a car. If this is not a big deal for him, why don’t you step away from the bong for a minute and give it a rest?
We get it, you’re miffed that GRM didn’t mention all of Akard’s achievements in BMW club racing for 2009. Have you looked at the GRM forum?? Maybe post up your complaint there???

GRM supports club racing like nobody else in this business. Judging by the skimpy page counts on most all of my other car mags, and the robust size of the recent GRM and CM issues, I’d say they are weathering the economic storm better than most. You’re unhappy that Akard didn’t get his due, ok we get that. Making it basically personal and disparaging the whole magazine like this is way out of line.
Have to say, most of us haven’t met you yet, but this ain’t a great first impression.
So it seems, a man cant speak his opinion in this country, without being lynched by the majority. Did not mean to upset you racers. Just seems to me, that more attention should be focused on the racers, and less on the ametuer gearheads. I thought GRM was a motorsports publication. The spec e-30 racers are true grassroots sportsmen. To win a race, let alone a championship, in NASA, BMW CCA, SCCA, etc, is a
testament to the dedication and sacrifice you guys make. I apologise if I offended any of you. That was not my intention. I just feel more coverage should be merited to true racers, and less to the shade tree mcguyvers, bolting v-8s into 300 zxs, in the name of motorsports. I stand behind my convictions, and will not waiver. I do however admit, my criticisms were a little too harsh. For that, and only for that, I
sincerely apologise to GRM and anyone else, whose feathers I may have ruffled. joe

Akard has nothing to do with my opinions. I spoke my mind, and will not rescind my opinion. Sorry if I upset you. Go pop some acid!
seems like grm can’t win. scca folks are annoyed at the lack of scca coverage and now bmwcca folks are pissed about the lack of coverage (or at least a crew chief is). they do give nasa and spec e30 pretty good coverage in general and I do enjoy reading GRM more than Roundel (too many test driving a cabrio cross country type articles in roundel for my taste). joe, are you a NASA member? you get grm free with your membership btw.

No ruffled feathers here.
It’s just that you came across as a complete douche, which I imagine you are not.
It’s Grassroots Motorsport Magazine, NOT BMW Club Racing Results Magazine. I like the diverse coverage they provide, and I really do think they do a fantastic job. If it was 100% race coverage and results, I for one would not read it.
I understand you want to spread the word about the car you maintain and your driver, but why not complain that Road and Track or Car and Driver didn’t post the results?
Party on dudes.

(just saw this post after I posted my previous reply)
Sorry Joe, I’m not gonna bong your ass- I don’t swing that way. :side:
How can you say Akard has nothing to do with your opinion??? Your complaint was about GRM not publishing Akard’s achievements…I don’t get it. I didn’t say Akard told you to post what you did.
I think maybe hitting the bong might help you relax a little, seriously.
