There was a dyno at Putnam (which you missed.)
Pardon my density, but what numbers and what HP rules? I still see 2700#, 168 HP and no engine or ECU mods. Did I really use the right link? When I click I get an 18 July 2013 doc.

I have no problem with this rule, but the numbers are surprising. What kind of oil did the .020" over test engine use? I’ve seen 4 WHP spread using different types of oil.
Does this mean we’ll need to submit dyno sheets each year?
So with the new curvature rule would Harness’ motor fail with a whooping 149 HP Since there is a lack of a dip? The 7 guys going to nationals will have to let us know how it works.
Other than giving you a decent idea of your engine’s output, having your own dyno sheet won’t help you argue against a DQ.
Given the fact that scales aren’t even set up before Saturday practice most weekends, there will be a lot of scrambling to ensure compliance given the really tight band of power/weight adjustments. Assuming there’s a dyno at the track (which is hard to surprise folks with - unlike my favorite compliance checks).
Given the variability of dyno readings from machine to machine (not to mention driveline drag with HOT oil after a session vs lukewarm oil at the dyno on a February morning), I hope the folks who miss by a little and get DQ’d don’t get branded as cheaters.
Personally, I still prefer a dyno rule that favors the mid pack. For example, if you show up and produce power that is more than X standard deviations from the mean, you get DQ’d. It would work to prevent guys like me who brought big (legal) power to regional races. It also works when there is a field full of well-prepped cars like last year’s Nationals.
I’d be down for that if we were able to test right after the races or all the cars together or something.
I think there is also discussion of another east coast nationals at VIR and they seem to always have a dyno available. Going to be a fun September/October!
Last time I dyno’ed my car my numbers were 157hp/156tq and that was the original unknown mileage 150k+ engine that had never been opened up. I just finished rebuilding the head and it felt very strong at RA in June. IMO that max hp number is a bit low.
are you positive the ECU chip is stock? Your info doesn’t match with any other I have heard.
My dyno graph looks just like the one posted in the rules, that includes the 6300 rev limit. I always open up dme’s to make sure there is a stock chip installed. I’ll post the graph tomorrow when I get back to the office.

Greg, yours looks like everyone elses. Looks like there is parity.
Tell us about your engine, new, used, rebuilt, rebuilt by bubba the engine guy…
Fan on, fan off, engine oil, air horn…
Oops, that run was back in 2008. If you are like many others that engine has been overhaeted or some other problem by now.

That was the original unknown mileage odometer stopped at 150k engine that came in my car. When that run was done nothing had been done to the engine, except basic tune up stuff, it had never been opened up. I know that because I got a book full of receipts with the car. I was not running a fan, and back then was probably running M1 15W50.
I am still running that engine, the block still hasn’t been touched, but I did just rebuild the head and it feels very strong!!
My point was that unbuilt old M20s can make good power, so maybe that 162hp cap is a little low.
Stupid question maybe, but was the dyno a dynojet, with all the settings as listed in the rules? Thanks!

Good question, and I really don’t know. As Robert pointed out it was a while ago. Those runs where done at Balanced performance during one of the SE dyno days.
Awesome. Thanks for the word! I think it’s tough to compare numbers from one dyno to the next because there are so many variables, and since there really is no “standard” measurement of HP. So while your numbers look good, I don’t think we can compare them to the numbers for the new dyno rule…Having said all that, I have my own doubts about the repeatability and accuracy of any dyno. I’m hopeful that the new rules got it right and that we don’t have any un-deserved DQs.

162 is certainly on the edge but I think it should be high enough. When my motor was brand spanking new the highest it ever pulled was a 159. Now, in its fourth season, it last dyno’d ~150. The highest hp I’ve seen from confirmed legal motors is 161. I’ve heard/seen that on multiple cars and dynos - never any higher though. I suppose if you’re flirting with the 162 number you can run heavier fluids or something for a little cushion.
Vic, you might need to just pull a couple of spark plug wires off yours!
I was only running with 4 spark plugs at VIR…didn’t you notice the S14 under the hood?
Ok, so stupid question again: Robert, were all those pulls with the dynojet (and settings) from the new rule?

These Salazar guys…no shame!
Honestly, I don’t know. The 159 was several years ago at VIR in February on the mobile dyno that NASA had rented for the weekend. The more recent pulls were at Mach V in Sterling - I’ll have to dig up the files to confirm what settings were used…
