Balanced Performance Dyno Day for Atlanta area

#41

re AFM swapping, were they just different ages?
And I would stop there …
cheers,
bruce

I bought a spare AFM to bring to the dyno. It’s pretty dirty. Is the AFM sensitive to cleaning solvents or can I just hit it with brake cleaner?

And guys, what swaps got you what hp and torque increases? And lets see the dyno graphs.

#43

My car pulled mostly in the 155hp and 155torque range with one pull of 157hp and 158torque. Jason told me it was a false positive as the car had cooled a bit, but I am claiming itB) . Not bad for the original motor that has never been opened up.

Thanks again Patton

I have nothing to hide so I’ll post my chart first. The three lowest output numbers came with a 173 ECU. I then tried a borrowed 153 ECU and picked up a few HP. Car already has a new permament 153 ECU as Alex has a mountain of them in his shop. Peak number 159.5. I can work with that!

BTW Craig Geiger’s new name is King Ding-A-Ling;)

Edit: my attachement is too large,(My wife says that a lot too) who has a server that can host the image?

#45

I could have sworn we had an album in the Pictures area for dyno graphs, but I can’t find them now.

Who is Alex?
I can put the dyno chart on an ftp site if you’d like. Email is Scott(at)Gress(dot)org

Scan it as a jpeg. Upload it to photobucket, then just copy the img code and paste here.

Damion’s dyno graph is at ftp://Filesharing.BrasselerUSA.com

So what can I use to clean a dirty AFM?

And who is Alex? He’s not someone at Balanced Performance is he?

#49

The guy that helps me out with my car. Alex Molitor

Scott you can get a can of Mass AirFlow cleaner at any auto parts store.

#51

Carb cleaner works well, as will most any other solvent. MAF cleaner should work, but it might be a bit more pricey.

The ECU and AFM swaps I did were simply different units from a couple donors we have laying around. I don’t know dates/mileage/etc. I believe both ECUs were ‘153’ units.

My real gains came in torque. I believe the ECU swap got me 2 ft-lbs and the AFM got 6 more ft-lbs.

After the dyno rule comes out I will know how much more I need to squeeze out of my junkyard motor. I plan to spend more dyno time tweaking things once I have a target in place. I know I am down on tq and I have a significant dip in hp & tq at 5,000 rpm. Also, my curves seemed a lot more jagged than the others.

But I lose way more time on track to inconsistency and little b@lls than to the missing 10 ft-lbs of torque. :frowning:

Thanks to all that attended on Saturday.

When Chuck returns to town I’ll deliver all of the dyno sheets to him.
I would post them, but I’m doing good to post text, much less something
difficult on the interweb.

As a generalization, the Moberg curve mirrors the curves of Patton, Moses,
and Geiger. Yet these 3 were all in the 158-162hp and 156-160tq.

Robinson’s curve and numbers were just like Mobergs.

Taylor’s curve was the same but with peak numbers at 153.9 and 152.6

Fred’s car lays down in the top end with only 152hp but 159.8 tq.

The other cars (Patton 911, Patton 8, and Devinney were bad to dip at 5000rpm
and were too bouncy.

I’ll be at balanced on Tuesday night at 5:30 with parts from the 241 to bolt onto
the 911 to see if i can improve its results.I’ll also see how long the 8 car lasts before it blows up a set of newly installed rod bearings.
You’re welcome to come and join me. Plan on dinner and bench racing with Jason after the tinkering with the 911 car.

Again, thanks to all that participated. I’m hopeful you learned a thing or two.

Regards, Robert Patton

PS, it would have been nice had a car from the Nationals been at the gig…Wait, Steve how did your car post at Mid-ohio?
The 241 car of mine was at 151hp and 155tq on the dyno at Mid Ohio in 2006. I know…apples, oranges and pears comparisons.

Robert -

I don’t recall the exact numbers (I had left to run another race and my crew guy didn’t get a printout - and I knew I wouldn’t be back at that dyno to tune, so I didn’t worry about it) but I believe it was within a couple hp and a couple ft-lbs of the readings at Balanced Performance (156/144 before tweaks).

PS - If anyone has any suggestions for eliminating the 5k dip, smoothing out the jagged lines, and bringing up the torque, I am all ears!

Bring it back to their shop Tuesday night and we’ll try the same known-good-parts from the 241 on your car too.

At Summit Point, the dyno operator spotted a jagged dyno plot and said “that car needs a new ignition.” Coil? Plugs? Wires? Dist cap/rotor? Take it for what it’s worth.

#57

I’ll post my dyno report soon… Haven’t had time to scan and post it. The #82 car is putting down some angry power, like Jones on a roids rage… It’s strong.

Posted on the blog this forum software sucks.

What you toolboxes don’t know is that after the “by the book” racers left, JP showed up to prove to potential buyers of his wife’s race car what they are actually going to pay for. And apparently it’s a hell of a deal:

He kept messing around with stuff in between runs. I couldn’t tell exactly what he did because they had the garage door 3/4 the way shut (just enough to allow the exhaust to escape).

Holy …! Uh that doesn’t give us potential buyers any haggling room does it now!
