Anyone racing at Summit Point ?

#1

There is not any discussion about this weekend’s race at Summit Point. Who is going? How about some good 'ole Vic Hall smack talk…Anyone care to chime in? Regards, Robert Patton

I guarantee that I am going to kick everyone’s ass who finished behind me.

As for my ability to beat my fellow SpecE30-ers, I am doubtful of a close to podium finish given I have not been on the track in almost 11 months.

I think we have about 8 competitors this weekend. I am just hoping to follow someone else around the track who is quick in order to help knock the rust off of the nut behind the wheel and get a half-decent qualifying time.

Jon, this is good. More smack talk from the other 8 spec e30 racers…Regards, Robert

Alonzo Taylor
Chris Cobetto
Stephen Kapuschansky
Carlton Goldthwaite
Kenneth Neuhoff
David Herrington
Stephen Dubovsky
Jon McAvoy
Skip Bennett

is the list. Carter has other obligations and will not be there. I think Vic is still on vacation in Greece.

Sean, Skip is a new name? I’m betting my money on Big Al cause he’s the one that most often frequents NASA SE events. Go Al, carry the SE banner for all of us Georgia racers. Regards, Robert

Let me see if I’ve got this right, Carter and Damion aren’t going? I’d say the odds of winning are pretty darn high. Wish I had time to make the trip.

What about Chris and Carlton? I wouldn’t count them out.

Hey Robert

last summit race I qualified last out of 9 cars…both days…so I cant talk any trash. But I have my excuse, #4.2 version 9.0 "My tires sucked"

I want to do a little better this weekend, but in the back of mind is that I need to same something for Mid Ohio…

I’ve never been to Summit before so I don’t know how parking in the paddock is. Is there any chance somone that is getting there early can save a couple extra spaces in the paddock? Carlton and I won’t be getting there until after 7pm today.

Thanks!

I am hoping to get there around gate openning time, but that is assuming putting on the new vinyl and loading up go smoothly.

I will do my best to get us a row. My truck is a gold metallic F-250 crew and the trailer is a silver Pace 24ft.

Thanks.

Okay, Damion’s started the smack talking and we aren’t even close to the Roebling Race. Damion, you’ll have two Robeling weekends if you race with CCA in December. Will you be there? I’ll start now on my list of slow excuses. And Big Al is already making excuses. This is good. I’ve got a feeling Big Al was over hung at the last Summit event and was sandbagging the field with his last place qualifing attempts. Al, that’s what you get for following the pink 944 around the track. I noted you didn’t finish last, so there is hope for tommorow. Regards, Robert Patton

Race results? Sean? Carlton? Al? Others… Thanks in advance, Robert Patton

well I only have Sat official results.

D. Herrington best = 1:30.839
J. Scott best = 1:30.559
A. Taylor best = 1:33.332
J. McAvoy best = 1:34.079
S. Dubovsky best = 1:33.568
S.Kappy best = 1:36.027
K. Neuhoff best = 1:35.105
C.Goldthwaite DNF
C.Cobetto best 1:30.753
that is the official order. Chris and Carlton had contact in T5, carlton retired, Chris was moved to last in class

Sunday Chris won and I think Skip bennett was second , but it may have been David Herrington…I had to boogie and get in the pace car and didn’t see the last lap.
On Saturday the driver J. Scott was the co-driver for Skip Bennett. that is Dave Pallisters old car

Sean, any results from Sunday? And, let me guess on the Chris/Carlton incedent…Carlton was ahead and turned into Chris, which spun Carlton out.Carlton technically has the position, but loses in the quest to hold position. Feel free to swap to roles of the racers (i.e. Chris turns into Carlton), regardless the front car spins and the second car wonders why there wasn’t enough racing room. So, now that I’ve stirred the rumor mill, what did happen? Close quarters racing?Cars and drivers okay? Too early to comment? Mind my own business? Thanks in advance, Robert Patton

He said he retired since it was about 1.5 laps to go and wasn’t sure of damage. Chris has a pretty big whack on the side behind the door.
Carlton, if I have that wrong, please correct me.
Both drivers OK and both cars raced Sunday

Because of the two incidents at Summit Point, evidence has been gathered and the results of the crashes will be reported, as usual, here on the site.

I still need to talk with one more driver.

recap

Saturday started well for all drivers, warm up had Skip Bennet’s car driven by Jan (?sp?) turning a 1:29.8 which also happened to be the best time of the entire weekend. Qualifying had Jan on the pole, myself (carlton) 2nd, Chris 3rd, Harrington 4th…

Race start went well, at least for me as I finally did not screw it up and was in 1st place going into turn 1. Jan start was not so great and I think it was carlton, chris, harrington, jan coming out of turn 1. We raced only 3 laps before red flag came out, than black flag all. Not sure the cause of the red flag, but one might guess it was 944 related.

On the restart I led the group through 10 and as the pace car pulled off I put the hammer down. Similar to what one sees on TV…pace car pulls off and you go… Well technically Chris informed me that I am not suppose to do that and I needed to maintain the pace set by the pace car until you actually get a green flag. Now I have never seen that happen on TV, but it seems I need to do it differently next time. any comments?

So I led again going through turn 1, than a lap or so later chris had closed the gap and decided to make a pass in T5 turn exit. Chris tends to take T5 from far left, I tend to take it from the middle or slightly right of middle. Either way coming out of T5 I had the middle of the track chris had the far left, but enough pavement for all four tires to be on the track. As I see it I held my position and no my car was not loose, and chris made slight contact just in front of my left rear tire with his front right. Since I was basically at my tire limits the contact got the rear lose and we than wacked again on the tank slap that ultimately caused most of the damage on each car and sent me into the grass. I could have kept racing, but with only a lap or two left I decided to call it a day. Chris wound up DQing himself and everyone went home with no hard feelings and looking forward to Sunday.

Sunday started slow, as again a few 944’s on the warm up session collected on the front straight after Bobby (pink 944) blew an engine sending oil everywere and collecing two other 944 before anyone even made it to turn 1. Black flag all ened the session. Qualify\ing was much the same as saturday. This time Skip was driving his car and got the pole by 4/10ths over yours truley. Chris was 3rd by a fraction…3/100ths behind me, than harrington and the rest of the group. I again got a good start …wow twice in a row…who would have thought? and went into turn 1 in the lead with Chris in 2nd followed by Skip and Harringtion. After a few laps chris made the pass attempt in turn 1, and probably would have passed me anyway, but I decided to help him by accidently shifting into 5th instead of 3rd. The only problem was I did not initially realize I was in 5th as I was keeping my eye on chris. Next thing I know Skip and Harringtion easly get by me as well. Oops… Off we went with me in 4th now Harrington 3rd, Skip 2nd, Chris 1st. Skip was chasing Chris and I was trying to get by Harrinton. After some close racing a few attempts that I ultimatley backed off, some side by side racing in turn 3, I finally got by Dave as we were both dealing with lap traffic in turn 3-4. I set my sights on Skip and managed to get on his tale with three laps to go. I was on his tale coming through 10 and tired to get a bit of a draft down the front straight. I managed to get right on his tale and draft, but still could not seem to use the draft to get by. I decided to pull out and at least give Skip the impression I could pass or was about to pass hoping he might push the braking zone a bit too much and have trouble in turn 1. Which is exactly what happened and I managed to get by. Chris was still a few car lengths in front and I did mangage to catch him on the final lap in the carosell as I turned by best time of the day and chris was probably being careful. He wound up 1st, I wound up second just 3 car lengths or so back, than Harrington. Of course to top off a interesting weekend I was DQ for being 2745 lbs. oops forgot I took out that 10 pound fire extinguisher. ( i originally had 2)
