Who can ID a diff by it's insides?

#1

I “had” a 3.73 LSD diff. Now I open the diff because the LSD is apparently shot and I’m surprised that it’s insides don’t look exactly like my LSD rebuild kit pictures. Look at the photos and tell if I’ve a problem.

I’ve got a hunch Molitor swiped my diff. Ok, now I’m officially pissed. It may be time to go to the armory.

Scott - that is my hand on the diff (Mike and I took those pictures for Chuck). The primary observation you should make is the cylindrical housing in the center between the bearing and ring and pinion. If it is open, you will see the spider gears in the center upon removing the rear cover. If it is an LSD, you will see a housing that contains the disks and other LSD spider gears. The star shaped piece you are referring to in the picture is the hold down plate for the clutch packs and gears.

It’s figured out. Molitor stole my diff. That c**ks****r. There is no mistake about it because last year I did a whole write up on how to test LSD. And when the cops helped me pick up the car from him, the speedo sensor was broke, which at the time was a puzzle. Now it all makes sense.

Well the last laugh will be mine.

You know I was always worried when he had someone’s car for an extended period of time he would start selling parts off of it. He figured he’d find another one eventually and replace it I’m sure. Only problem with him is that eventually is never.

So he sold your diff and maybe sold your wheels too. Check to see what else he may have taken out.

It’s like going in for an appendectomy and coming out with one kidney missing.

That guy would sell the paint off of your car. Then when you came to pick it up he’d say “I’ll bring your car to CMP next Friday. It’s gonna be perfect, you’ll love it”.

Why is this guy not in jail? I read through all of the history related to your story and saw the comments about you winning a civil suit, but this is theft, clear, plain, and simple.

Sort of like a parts ponzi scheme!

I bought some parts from him off ebay once… I’m starting to wonder their history!

Wonder no more…Just send them back to Scott so he doesn’t have to sue you too! LOL

I’ve found a 325is in JAX that sort of runs. 2 door, auto. I’m going to go fetch it tomorrow and pull the diff, motor and anything else that seems of use. Then I’ll take it to the local junk yard.

Aren’t autos 4:10?

Hmm. I thought that all "is"s were 3.73 LSD. No?

Ranger -

I think you just found the 3 seconds you had lost at Road Atlanta.

If you don’t get the car in Jax, Levie owes me a 3.73LSD so you can have that one (and just owe me one).

Early auto’s had 3.73, you have to check the tag…

#15

You have the diff apart…count the ring gear teeth and the pinion gear teeth and do the math. Don’t trust a 24 year old tag!!! Chuck

#16

I’m going to go ahead and get the E30 from JAX tomorrow. One guy said that in mid year '88 the auto 325is transitioned from 3.73LSD to 4.10LSD, so the car probablly won’t have the right diff. But I’ll check anyways. But there’s other useful stuff to pull off of the car and I’ll break even on the cost just by sending it’s head to Metric Mechanic to recover my core cost.

I’m also buying a 3.73LSD diff from a BF.c guy. Should it turn out to be shot, I still have Chuck’s rebuild kit. So one way or another, I will have a good diff.

#17

My race car started life as a 89 325is auto, and it had a 4.10LSD.

My parts car is a 91 325i auto, and it still has a 4.10open, so don’t assume you’re getting a 3.73.

If you can jack up the rear end, as Baader says it’s not hard to count the rotations of the driveshaft to the output shafts and make sure.

#18

Can I have the front valance mounts if they aren’t damaged? They are made out of plastic, and all of mine are snapped. BMW doesn’t produce them anymore and, I believe they are unique to the early year 325is. I was going to reproduce them out of metal if I can’t find any.

#19

The change over date for a 325is auto is production beginning 9/87, as I recall. I’m too lazy this evening to verify that on realoem.com

Send me a photo or diagram so I understand what you want and I’ll pull it as long as it’s not a big pita.

I’d be happy to sell/give parts. I owe a lot of you guys for help and parts you’ve squared me away with over the years, so you guys get whatever you want with my thanks for being a great American.

If I don’t owe you squat, offer enough to motivate me into removing it from the car. Or you could just wait a couple months. I’ve been so high maintenance this past year that I’m sure to owe you before long.

Note that this thing is going to have late model bumpers and my car is an early model. So there’s going to be some bumper stuff that I’ve no use for.
