Which spares?

#1

So we’re campaigning an SE30 in the OH/IN region this season. I’ve had some experience with e30 BMW’s in the past and found them to quite hearty. But I’m looking for a list typical failures points as they relate to extended track use. I want to build a list of spares so we can begin stocking the trailer. Our car will be driven by three different drivers (at least two per weekend) at any given time. So the wear n’ tear will add up fast.

Thanks!

Welcome to the region! These cars are pretty reliable as a whole. Here is my basic spare list right now

Front and rear brake rotors (front rotors are a must)
Front and rear brake pads (again fronts more are more important to have on hand)
1 front wheel bearing
1 rear wheel bearing
Hoses
Belts
2 rocker arms
Spark plugs
A couple of extra wheel studs
A used water pump
Caliper rebuild kit
Relays
fuses

That’s probably a pretty decent start, I have some other spares but I can’t remember what they are off hand.

This has also been discussed before

Motor mounts.

Thanks! And thanks for the additional post on the topic. I searched “spares” but it dodn’t come up with the post for some reason.

I’ll pass this info on to my team mates. As I recall tranny mounts like to break as well. Are old bearings easy to press out at the track? The Hondas I’ve used on track in the past would eat front wheel bearings every so often. We finally broke down and built up a pair of front knuckles to take to the track. Pressing the old Honda bearings out sucks without the proper tool.

Looking forward to this season!

The front bearings I think could be done at the track. The rear bearings. Well maybe if it were nationals and you thought you were going to win. Otherwise I think doing them on jack stands at the track without air (and most likely the special tools, etc). It could be considered impossible, but I’m sure some hardcore soul here has done it with a multi-tool at night on a gravel driveway.

Front wheel bearings are not bad - we’ve replaced them at the track. Need a 32 mm relatively thin walled socket and a torque wrench that goes to at least 225 ft#. A few other things we take as spares:

ECU - preferable a 173, but at least something working
AFM
coil
cold start sensor
throttle position sensor
thermostat
throttle cable

I’ve not had the fun of doing rear ones, but the fronts are not too bad if you have the right puller. Sometimes you get lucky and don’t need one, but if you do, you will want soemthing with small thin jaws like this one.

Simon, Just so you don’t get the region car count too optimistic, this is the same car I posted about in OH/IN region forum. Kyle, Sean (yet to sign in), and I have partnered up for this season.

Thanks everyone for the spare part suggestion lists!

Lol, you guys had me excited about another car. Not to worry you guys will be fighting over the keys soon enough and have to build another one

From my E30 experiences, I’ll add a few items:

Oil Pan (for when you’re having an “off” day)
Fuel Pump(s)
Lower Radiator Hoes, I mean Hose
T-Fittings for throttle body coolant lines, etc (or just jump those now)
Hose Clamps… All different sizes
Obviously, pads and rotors, front and back
Spare Fire Bottle (in case yours detonates prematurely as well)

Ask Robert Patton though… He’s got the right idea. He’s got a spare race car :woohoo:

I find it’s a good idea to bring and extra 12 pack (and ice)… the domestic stuff is usually acceptable.

HA! It’s only a matter of time. We have a bet going as to who will start another SE30 first.

I didn’t think it was. In fact, that was one of the things I had to “put back” to stock on my car. I had bypassed them when that little cork gasket started to leak at the track a while back.

Whoops. Didn’t even think of that. Guess I need to go get another one of those t-body gaskets and whatnot.

So - I assembled a list - want to know if I have some stuff on this list that is just stupid - because the list is just evil… for instance - ABS computer - do I need a spare? Do they go bad that often? I can’t go the “Patton” route - a spare car  - I want to be prepared, but not crazy…

Any comment is appreciated. For some things like control arms - I’d install the new ones and hold on to my old ones to swap in in an emergency…
