What options for busted HEadlight Lens

#1

I have a broken lens on my right side low beam. Evidently in 88-89 they went to the halogen projector beams and not the regular sealed beams. When I look up parts priices, they seem to be $130 or so! Ouch!

Does anyone know if a regular sealed beam would replace this or would is it a different housing entirely? If not, does anyone have an old one without a broken lens.

Regular old sealed beams should work.

Try Mr. Lens, it’s a replacement plastic cover for the broken lens. You have to remove the old glass and cement/glue the new cover on. I bought a set for my low beams and fog lights. They are sold as a set of 2 for about $35

You can buy them from either Bavarian Auto or BMP.

After the fix/replacement, you might consider the stick-on flexible headlight covers. Some are even sporting the yellow version.

See the cover of GRM…

You guys with projectors need to pull them out and put them on Ebay then throw in crappy GE sealed beams.

I guarantee you’d get $100 for them.

Just to clarify what others have said.

You can easily swap the sealed beam headlights for ellipsoids, BUT you have to swap the whole thing- i.e., mounting buckets and bulbs. You can’t just stick a sealed beam bulb into an ellipsoid mounting bucket.

It’s a really easy swap, takes about 10 minutes per side to unbolt the 3 phillips head screws on each bucket and then swap them out. You can get the stamped steel buckets for sealed beams from any E30 '84-91.

You’ll have to do some minor wiring, the ellips have special plugs and only 2 wires per bulb, the sealed beams have standard sealed beam plugs (try to get them with the bucket assemblies- or they should be available at auto parts stores too) and the low beam plug has 3 wires.

Is it legal to swap out the headlights? Seems similar to bumper swaping. This is what everyone always brings up when you are doing something that the rules don’t say you can.

OK, I called BMP and BAVAUTO and neither carry the MRLENS replacment lens. DARN that sounded good!#!#*& Anybody no any other suppliers in the US as MRLENS is in South Africa!

Other ideas?

I wonder if the stick on plastic shields would suffice to hold the pieces together!

I’ll just be following any of you cats who have the ellipse units. You can have my track position…just light the way for me.

I have a client in Jersey that has a new line of BMW parts. I’m going up on Monday and I’ll ask them about this stuff. If anyone has any other needs as far as OEM replacement parts, or other things that might be useful for us, I’ll see if they can get them manufactured for us.

Give me your wish list folks!

I found an ellipsoid unit on ebay a couple of weeks ago and was the only on to bid in it, got it for $25 including shipping. "My name is Tom, I am an Ebay Junkie":woohoo:

I’ll swap my Sealed beams on my street car for your working projectors.

And buy you a case of your favorite beverage and pay shipping.

Looks like bmp stopped selling them. Here is there web site http://www.mrlens.net/index.htm.

I have a set that needed a cover and I bought the Mr. Lens cover. I bought another 89 is and dont need them now. I might be persuaded to sell the set or the right side. I believe the right side lens are fine. It was my left side that needed the lens. I have a set of Mr lens low beam. That are gathering dust now.

I think I still have the assemblies from my 87 vert

Michael is correct. The car is supposed to have the original type headlights that came on that car. And why would anyone go to the trouble of swapping them? Just stick a cover on them (for protection) and go have a beer.
