What is a SpecE30 car worth?

#1

Kind of a rhetorical question…(but maybe not…).

What do you suppose is the value of a Spec E30 race car on the used race car market?

I had someone ask me if I’d sell mine and I had no idea what it is worth.

$4000 $5000???

I think if someone walked up and said here is $7000 I’d have a hard time saying no.

What do "race" cars sell for? I never had to buy one as I built mine…

Ric,

That’s a good question and I’ve often wondered the same thing. I have seen e30’s on the BMWCCA racecar classifieds go for some decent money.

Since I sold my 944 Racecar and helped Dave P. sell his, I know that the racecar market place doesn’t work like regular used car sales and values can vary widely. Price would depend largely on the level of preparation that goes into the car, its overall condition, engine condition (freshness), aesthetics and finding someone knowledgeable enough in race cars to recognize its value/worth.

I think a good rule of thumb for selling a racecar is to price it about 3/4 of what it would cost to build. I think that’s a good starting place for an asking price. Good value for buyer and reasonable depreciation for the seller.

In E30 terms, my car has cost me about $13-14k total including, parts, labor, tires/wheels etc. It’s in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition (knock-on-wood)…….So if I were to sell it, I’d probably ask somewhere in the neighborhood of $10,500, and be patient since it would probably take a while to sell. (There is a butt for every seat)

What are your thoughts?…….

I think Brain’s "3/4" idea is about right. Another factor that determines value is the series where the car is raced. If a car can be raced in several series, it tends to have more value. While our cars won’t win an ITS or KP race (although Robert and I finished third of nine KP cars…and his motor was down on power), they are always competitive in Spec E30. And with stable rules, they will always be competitive in Spec E30.

If anyone sees a Spec E30 or nearly Spec E30 for sale, please feel free to let me know.

I’d gladly pay 7-10K for a well sorted car.

Surely you jest, $7,000 with the work of art paint job that you have. Surely you remember the old BMW ART CAR Series…do you really think you could could come close to aquiring one of those beauties for $7K!

Car is not for sale…but I have to tell you if someone offered it might be.

With the "art car" paint job price may have to go up…

I’d custom paint it in any color rustoleum makes and I can sling with a brush or a foam roller.

If the kids do it the price goes up…
