Craig -

Your wish is my command. To avoid polluting the IFU thread, here’s one for the sprint race reports.

Since Craig says I can’t blame it on the skates, I’ll start by saying that I didn’t drive well this weekend. I was fighting the car all weekend starting with the enduro. Highlights:

  • 20+ heat cycle R888s are not the hot ticket
  • Everyone seemed to suffer from low grip at CMP
  • 3/16 rear toe out is driveable, but difficult when it is a combined 3/16 comprised of 1/8 toe IN on the right and 5/16 OUT on the left. Right hand turns get a little loose.
  • “Loose is fast” has its limits
  • Maximum camber in the right rear is NOT the way to put down the power at a clockwise track
  • Spring rubbers in the left rear help the car turn right. Big spring rubbers help it turn right too well.

About the only thing I accomplished was getting a finish to salvage some points for our enduro “team.”

Through practice and qualifying on Saturday I had the car working better and put on some good tires for the race. I was gridded behind Jones for the start and got a great start right at the drop of the green. Jones didn’t get as good a jump and I got inside him. He eased me over toward the wall to defend but by then I was alongside and still making the pass. What happened next is subject to a lot of interpretation and Brian and I had a civil conversation and I apologized for my part in it. From my view, although I was squeezed over to the grass I was under control when we started braking. At that point, I believe something cause Brian’s car to move left just enough to make contact with my wheel to his front fender, which turned me into Rick Mariani’s door.

It was a very aggressive move on my part and I have apologized for the contact. But I maintain that I was under control until hit in the right rear. Even with that hit and the subsequent side-to-side hit to Rick, I was able to slow the car and make the apex of Turn 1, which tells me I was not making some Hail Mary, never-gonna-get-it-whoa’ed-down move.

Like most on-track incidents, there are varying views of this one and I know some will disagree. I don’t think I have a reputation for being recklessly agressive. I hope this doesn’t change that.

“Other than that, how was the play Mrs. Lincoln?”

After the turn 1 kerfuffle, we made it around a few more turns to find a Miata making love to the side of a Legends car, which is quite scary given that a Legends car makes a Miata look big, roomy and safe. As I understand it, both drivers were fine but the red flag is never fun to see.

After we got restarted, the race only went a few more laps, which were fun but it would have been a real bummer if we hadn’t had the IFU to look forward to.

I made the decision based on my poor driving and poor handling car to pack it in Saturday afternoon. I drove back to Atlanta Saturday night to spend some time with the family. I understand there was more excitement at the start of Sunday’s race. Sorry to hear that. :frowning:

I think I am done for the year but I will probably come watch the December races. See you then!

I beat Steve. That summarizes my weekend.

#3

I thought little Bobby was posting there for a second.

Here is my excuse.

More on DTOM one of these days.

#4

Did Jones do that?

#5

It does sort of look like his handy work doesn’t it. Of course if I had Jones car I would have just driven through the wreckage and been there with time to spare.

#6

Congratulations to Travis for his win on Saturday and to Al Taylor for his win on Sunday.

More later.

Who won the IFU? On foot…on track…Johan drives to the front of the field from a last place starting position. Whew, he can drive.

Regards, Robert Patton

Here is the video from the Saturday Sprint Race.

Johan was in a league of his own the way he carved through IFU :woohoo:

Congrats to Travis and Al on their wins.

I had a great time and was glad to meet a lot of SE30 racers that I haven’t met. Hopefully we can keep getting fields this big because it was a blast to drive.

Dad and I were able to pull off an enduro win due to our attempt to make it on one stop and it somehow worked out with our gamble that the race would be called early due to darkness. That was my first time driving a car for 1:30 and I could only imagine what Steve was going through after driving 3 hrs by himself.

I wish we got to race longer Saturday. I had my tire pressures just right and might have been able to catch the group ahead, but it’s all woulda, coulda, shoulda, so I’ll just be happy with my 5th place and keep looking forward to Dec and racing everyone then.

#8

Travis and Al win? Was everyone else driving backwards?:woohoo:

#9

Heh…yea…Travis and Al took both wins and both poles…

Damion, too bad you weren’t there to take your beating like the rest of em…

Al

Damion, I gave Al all levels of trash for sandbagging with bad engines for the past two years. He and Travis were both fast for the entire weekend. Al stayed in front of Johan for the entire race on Sunday. Johan missed the starting grid and had to start last in Saturday’s event, but Travis was fast and kept Al in second place.

See what you get for not being there? The new kids in town take over. Congratulations, again, to the new winners. (Travis, new for this year?).

Race Report:

Was 5th fastest sat warm up which gave me hope. Qualifying was a pretty good session, even with the large # of cars, I heard very little about traffic.

Qual:

Travis
Johan
Rev Al
Patton
Geiger

For the race Johan missed the grid which set in motion the complete screwing up of the order by ME. At the start I passed Travis, barely before the yellow flag at 4, on the restart Travis and I had a battle back and forth for most of the 4 laps, he came out ahead (excuse coming)…as a Miata decided that 2 BMW’s would be more fun to race with than just himself…actually Travis was able to get by and keep me behind him and I am happy with a good battle and 2nd. Gieger was 3rd, followed by Patton and then I think Palacio. Alex Reznikov got the coveted 6th.

Sunday we had a qualifying race for the grid. I was able to get by Travis easily as his car was not running 100%, I took off after Patton and was able to squeeze by in turn 14 using traffic, late braking, 2nd gear, karma, lucky rabbits foot, etc. About this time I saw Johan headed in, which gave me 1st.

Grid

Yr Humble Writer
Patton
Travis
Geiger
Mariotti?

For the race, I didn’t make any changes. I knew tire’s would be the issue so I was not really going to push at the beginning. At the start I got knocked across the exit of turn 1 all the way thru the dirt past turn 2. As I came back on, I saw Bill Z and Jones coming out of 2, Mariotti going into 3. I assumed Patton, Travis, and Geiger were all thru 3. I set off after Mariotti and when I passed him, I could barely see Patton up ahead. I think Johan caught Mariotti the next lap, so I knew I was in trouble. I began to real in Patton and after 5 or so laps he was getting really loose and obviously his brakes were going out. I passed Patton in the kink, running as far left at the apex as you can. I then focused on being as smooth as possible as I knew I needed my tires for the last few laps. Johan was never able to get close enough to make a move and I was really happy to see that checkered…it has been a while.

1 Alonzo
2 Johan “Wolfgang” Schwartz
3 Patton
not sure from there…

I want to thank everyone for a great weekend. Scott MC for making sure I did not freeze to death after Travis left me for dead Friday night. Thanks to the Halls for the slimy dog turd next to my tow rig. Oh, I got quite a few comments on the e12 tow rig, that thing was built back when steel was steel and the word “beaver” meant something. Thanks to Jones for cooking and the scenery. Geiger for the use of the Jack, Travis for the hotel room saturday night. The Pantas clan for putting on a great show, The CMP staff for cleaning up the mess so quick, Chuck Taylor, Geiger, Scott MC for the work on IFU, Whoever I am leaving out that helped me over the weekend except for the person that brought that rotgut monkey pee.

Rev. Alonzo Graham Taylor III esq. PFU

More video to come… but as I told everyone at the track, considering some house stuff we have going on, Wendy said I could buy tires or go race this weekend. So I chose to bring my selection of old crappy used tires out and have fun. Below is the sprint race from Saturday (after the restart). IFU 3 and Sunday’s race to come. Had a great time racing with whoever was around and trying to keep the car on track.

Had a great time this weekend. Saturday was a good effort, even though I couldn’t get anything better then 1:54. But hey, you gotta take what you can get. Finished qualifying in 8th and with Johan being gone ended up moving forward. Made a good move on Eric Palacio at the start and came up on the yellow for the legends and Miata. After the restart Eric got by me in Carousel to put me in 6th. Bill tried to catch me, but did not, so I finished that way.

IFU was just a big mess. Fun, but still a mess. Bunch of people trying to go 3-4 wide in to the corner. I guess I missed the point of that, so stayed back and just tried not to get my car messed up.

Sunday was even more fun. Qualified 6th again. In the race I saw Rick Mariani dive down to the inside in the grass, pretty much assumed there was no way for him to stop in time and I was right. Next thing I know Geiger was spinning right in front of me. I went in the grass and by the time I got back on track was in 15th place. Spent the rest of the race climbing back up to finish 10th.

Great beer drinking both nights. Thanks to Al for providing the Pig head. Thanks to everybody else for letting me use your tools, especially Scott Mc, Kelly and Al.

Oh and I beat Bill Z and Devinney, so I’m pretty excited.

Here is Saturday after the restart on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2P9ytnaK5_I

Like I said at the track, due to some house stuff (Powder Springs & Rain) Wendy and I are dealing with I was told I could either buy some tires or come and race… but not both. So the vibration you see is due to the old crappy hard flat spotted tires. The crappy driving, however, is all me…

Vimeo is back up and running, so I’ll have and IFU video and write-up soon along with more from Sunday’s (much longer) race.

But you made it to the track, even with bad tires, that is better than staying at home raking leaves
