Am I reading Appendix A right, that a 1986 E30 is not legal? This seems like a good candidate, to race or for parts:

Is it just the change to motronic, or is there more? I’m trying to decide its value as a parts car.

There are definitely 1986 race cars running around. The engine must be swapped for an ‘i’ motor of course, and the rule about the car assumes the characteristics of the motor is generally cited as the rationale for them being legal.
AFAIK an 86 chassis is virtually identical to an 87 in the important ways: wiring harness and presence of ABS so dropping in an ‘i’ motor is a non-issue.
