Thoughts on Roebling Road

#1

Thought I would share my thoughts on Roebling Road from this weekend. For those of you who have not been, Roebling is about 15 miles outside of Savannah, GA and is very much a grass roots club track. The paddock area is inside the track and has a nice mixture of asphalt roads, grassy areas and scattered pine trees (comes in handy for shade in July!). Only problem with paddock is that to enter/exit you have to cross the front straight! They only open the gates between run groups so if your timing is wrong, you might have a bit of a wait.

As for the course itself, it’s very, very flat as you might expect. It is approximately 2 miles in length but very fast. Many of the turns are high speed sweepers that seem to go on forever especially turn 3 and turn 9 leading on to the front straight. Most places have a pretty good runoff and there are few concrete objects to hit when you do. I really enjoyed the sweepers as they were different than really any of the other tracks I had run.

They had two race groups, Thunder and Lightning. We were in the Lightning along with a bunch of Miata’s, coupel hondas and couple of 944 cars. I want go into the race much as Mr. Patton has already covered that aspect. I will say thay it was fun working my way back up thru the back markers after totally blowing my qualifying run with two offs in about 4 laps (darn corded tires) and then blowing the first to second gear shift on the standing start! It’s amazing how many cars go past when taking 4 seconds to find 2nd gear!

Not sure if it was our driving or the track but we really chewed up the tires.

Brandon and I also instructed for the first time, which was a new experience as well. Thanks to Robert for getting us setup.

Keith:

I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one having trouble finding second gear during standing starts. In my eta, I had no trouble at all. With this car, it’s been a problem from the beginning.

I’m not sure if I’m just missing it due to the short shifter, or if there is a problem with the car. Regardless, I’ll find somewhere to practice.
