That Little Race Shop SE30 Build

#1

This thread will be dedicated to progress updates of the That Little Race Shop, LLC Spec E30. The car started off a year ago as the result of a car accident. The 88’ 325i replaced a totalled out Toyota Avalon, and the decision was quickly made to race the E30 eventually - in some way or another.

Recently the car has been stripped down to the tub, and the team at TLRS is working hard to prepare the car for a new finish while components come in. Some of the team members and I will provide updates for the rest of the fall. We are planning on finishing the car this December, and we will report our budget as well as list of suppliers to anyone who is interested or needs a hand with their own SE30.

Enjoy!

Kind Regards,

Christian Funk

With this year’s revised ballast placement rules there is no reason not to remove the trunk tar.

#7

There had to have been 30+ lbs of it. it was a real PITA with a heat gun and a big pry bar

#8

To address the trunk tar, we will be very diligent with engineering this car, and weight targets and distribution will be tracked with scales.

Good trick for removing the sound deadening crap in the truck and foot wells, cover it in dry ice and little water and leave it for 30 mins or so, then a few whacks with a hammer and the stuff snaps off!

Sebring!

Christian - where are you guys based? Going to be running FL region?

#11

We are out of Melbourne, in Central FL and will DEFINITELY be running FL region!

#12

Excellent news.

#13

Cool. I’m from Melbourne. Where are you located? I live in Baltimore now but I’m down there 1-2 times a year to visit family. You might be a good excuse to get out of the house and talk about cars for a bit. I hope the build is going well.

We are off of Wickham Rd just north of Aurora Rd, across from the Harbor Freight (convenient, eh?) If you’re gonna be in town let us know and we’ll show you the shop! The build is going well so far, parts coming in and like I said, were getting ready to put the roll cage in and start painting the car.

Cant go together fast enough! :stuck_out_tongue:

Excellent! You’re just two hours up the road, I’m down in the West Palm Beach area. You going to Sebring this weekend? I’ll be there with my SE30 on Sunday and both the 8th and 9th with Chin Motorsports running the car for seat time and coaching.

Hope to see you out there!

Shawn

Yeah we were there yesterday for the Chump Car 14 hour enduro. 7th place. Have fun today and we’ll see you at the track!

Progress update! So the past few weeks were spent on the road, with a trip to Atlanta for Petit Le Mans, and another trip to Austin Texas to inspect the new testing facility (yeah I wish…) and see my family.

As far as the E30 build goes, the car has been washed, degreased and otherwise finalized for painting, which will start Monday the 17th in the evening. The sunroof panel was welded up and sealed, ground to shape and filled with bondo before sanding to final shape.

The AIM MXL came in (big thanks to the VAC motorsports guys for the hook-up!), and we’re starting to lay out the wiring harness for cleaning up and preparation for reintegration with the chassis.

Now, for some pictures of the recent progress… enjoy!

Did you cut out the inner steel layer of the moonroof. I found a massive amount of rust building between those two layers even though there were no exterior signs of rust.

#19

I hope by hookup you mean you got it for super cheap. If its not to late I suggest you check out the iq3 logger dash. Once you add the price of a good logger to that AIM you’ll see the light. I think Jim Levie also has one and he’s like the smartest guy in se30. As far as I can tell the iq3 is as good or better than the mxl pro for only 1500$.
