Talking about YOU

#1

Those with a BMW CCA race license are aware of their race discussion e-mail list. So, log-on and you’ll see that they’re talking, yet again, about the spec e30 crowd. Good discussion and the talk is favorable. Regards, Robert Pattonj

I saw a funny consipracy theory pop-up in that discussion…Apparently, we hate BMWCCA.

I think some ppl just don’t get it, yet it’s so simple - we want good clean affordable racing. Spec E30 is the answer!

Yeah, I am following the discussion too – it is interesting. BTW, nice post by you. I can’t post since I don’t have a license yet otherwise I would especially about the cost of some things wrt SpecE30. Someone who is doubting low cost of the class posted that he believes in CA donor car is $1500 and cage is $3000… I got my donor car for $600 and paid $1600 for custom weld in cage (done by reputable shop which does a lot of cages for racers, including one for Bill Arnold and his Targa Newfoundland winning car …)

Can you post a link or do you have to be a licensed BMW CCA racer to gain access?

You don’t have to be licensed CR racer to gain access. You can be in process of getting a CR license (whatever that means), pay additional $15 or so with your BMW CCA membership renewal, and will get an access to the list – but in read-only mode; only licensed racers can post.

I was wondering what Tony charges for a cage. When I decide to ditch the Autopower cage (which I bought from Tony), I’ll have to get a real one. How long was the car in for the cage install?

As far as the cost of SpecE30, my $800 donor was purchased in San Jose, which I believe is still in California. Isn’t "craigslist" wonderful?

I just got back into town after being gone for an extended memorial day weekend and have been wading through the emails on the BMW CR list (still have 50+ to read). Anyone have thoughts on how we would handle the spec tire question (since Tire Rack does not carry Toyo)?

It is true that cages are more out here in CA, at least based on the quotes I received in San Diego to get one welded in. Sounds like I may have to take the car up north!

Easy, race Toyos at NASA events and, should BMWCCA recognize a spec class(believe it when you see it…) purchase their spec tire and go racing with them. Regards, Robert Patton

Right. My point was that I don’t think that Tire Rack - the title sponsor of the BMW CR - would necessarily appreciate a CR race class that required a tire that they don’t carry.

Robert - I agree that the solution could be pretty simple. The tire could be spec’ed as something else for CR races (which Tire Rack carries), or just leave it open - as CR currently does.

For sure, we have a good program here at Spec E30. And I hope they don’t think we hate them. As a matter of fact, I’ve only (well, mostly) said good things about BMW CCA Club Racing. I’ve raced with them and have always had good weekends.

However, it is true that we have some differeing philosophies and ours is working pretty well.

One of my concerns is that they will adopt some form of Spec E30 which will put some racers in a difficult position by pulling drivers apart, car prep-wise. They will ask for racer input, the rules will change, and they will head right down the same path that leads to higher costs and less-close racing.

If they want to accept Spec E30 as it is and will strongly stick to the proven program, they will see some success.

I will continue to support NASA because they have supported us, but others might enjoy racing with both bodies.

I did not mention Tony’s name in my original post but I guess it was obvious who I was talking about.
Car was at Tony’s for about 3 weeks. When I originally called him about it, he said that he can take the car in 3 weeks and that it will probably be another 2 weeks for them to do the job. Since I wasn’t in a hurry, I just left it there. They were also working on bunch of other projects (including a car for 25hours of Thunderhill I believe) and received some new machines so it took a week longer but it was fine with me. I can genuinely recommend him – nice guy that does good work.
