Here is an interesting post I found about the current condition of Spec Miata racing.
I think the whole issue/misconception with Spec Miata boils down to the classes original intent:
“The SM class is intended to provide the membership with the opportunity to compete in low cost cars with limited modifications…”
When SM was created this is EXACTLY what it was. It was that way until around 2005. When I first started racing in this class most of the guys showed up in home-built cars with junkyard engines, trailering it themselves, working on it themselves. There was great camaraderie, no-one wanted to bend their cars, everyone was on a budget and common sense prevailed.
Now the class has evolved into a gentleman’s racing class where 7K pro motors, arrive and drive and win cost no object is the norm. If, like me, your goal is to race at the front of the pack and not spend an arm and a leg, SM is out. Pure and simple. The driving talents are the same, it’s the same guys racing, but the cost of being competitive has gone into the stratosphere. Did you guys know most of the front runners run special gas that costs $30+ a gallon? That’s where SM has gone.
It’s a shame. I tell anyone I know getting involved in SM racing to throw away the intent of the class and to see it for what it is. If you start from there there’s no reason to be disappointed.
If you take SM for what it is TODAY, the most competitive racing class in SCCA and NASA racing which showcases some superb driving talent it simply can’t be beat!! (just ignore the “low cost” part
