Should I buy an E36 M3?

#1

I’m thinking about selling my X5 and buying an M3 and some cheap mid 90’s tow vehicle. My E30 being laid up for so long is making me crazy. I think I need a DD with a clutch. If I do this I’ll come out ahead by ~$4k.

Should I do it?

Sure, why not?

Absolutely. The right tool for the job, they say.

You could even get a 4-door M3 and tell your spouse it’s practical, if that lie would help seal the deal.

And, how poetic that the net savings might about cover what you’ve flushed on those motor woes.

#4

Do eet. I’d highly suggest something diesel for the tow vehicle.

#5

I say "Hell Yes!"
e36 M3 FTW

#6

meh… it’s no E30… Buy Mr. Junky instead. Great DD.

#7

Just do it. I personally favor a late 98 or 99 M3.

One more vote for a 98 Sedan!

I still miss mine on occasion, especially since Kyle picked up a sedan last year. :frowning:
I’m going to have to settle for the 325iT I agreed to purchase yesterday.

When I was looking for a DD I limited it to E39 540I-Ms and E36 M3s. I bought a great 540 but more than once wished I had the M3 to go for track days rather than packing all my sh1t in the truck, trailer, etc. Both are exceedingly fun on the street tho.

I agree with the others that it would be a great buy. Plus trucks are dirt cheap right now, esp diesels.

Wow I want that car.

#13

Scott I think you are going to single handily pull us out of the recession:)

e36 M3 sedan is sweet, but if you have been used to an X5 you might be disappointed based on the technological advances of the newer BMWs. I would vote for a a new 128i. They are making great deals and it is the closest car to the e30 in the new lineup. I just traded in my Mini Cooper S for one, and it is one nice car. Don’t miss the Mini at all.

Oh hell ya

We LOVE our e36… and besides, a pick-up will probably end up being a more capable tow vehicle anyway.

(Did you think anyone would really say no? A question like this is like asking the attendees at an AA meeting if they want to go to the happy hour at the corner bar B) )

There’s no way in hell Ranger will do it. It makes too much sense and there is far too little that could go wrong, be experimented with, etc.

Any e36 is a rolling piece of plastic crap.

Sell the x thingee.Put the money in the bank for the kids.Purchase a beater pickup and lovingly park it in front of the house to impress the neighbors. Enjoy never having to wash or clean or change the oil.

I’m serious, who needs a nice street car when you’ve got the race car gfor the weekends.

Don’t rain on Ranger’s parade…I’m thinking the same thing for me someday. Gotta have at least one M-car before I get too much older.

Ranger should do a thorough analysis of all the brake pad compounds available for the E36 and compare to the available pads for the X5 before making any kind of a decision like this.
