Rules and What I Learned at the SE's First Race

#1

First: It measures-out that the RR tires are a bit wider than the old RA1 and 888. What this means to you is a possible DQ if you are/were at the maximum track width with the old tires and you install the new tires only to find…

Ask Scott McKay how innocently this can lead to a lousy day.

Second: How do you enforce/intrerpret rule 9.3.8.6.3 “adjustable rear spring perch.” I didn’t realize that my car had such…and if the rules don’t say you can, well how do I get one?
Without a doubt I’d like to lower the center of gravity by lowering the rear ride height. What does this rule mean. Clariication please…

Where is, or please remove from the table, the good ole forthcomming horsepower rule.

Thanks, RP

I don’t see the point in allowing for adjustable rear spring perches unless; a) shorter springs can be used, or b) modifications to the rear trailing arms are allowed. Stacking spring pads is simple, cheap, and works if you want to lift the rear. But with stock springs, no adjuster will get you lower than bare perches.

#3

Jim, can someone explain the “adjustable” spring perch. Last time I checked the sping perches were two big fixed plates, one on the trailing arm, one on the frame. Rules/wording confusion here?

My take on what was mentioned on the Director’s list is that it would be something similar to the adjuster used in the rear on a coilover kit.

#5

cannot work with specified springs…

#6

That is correct. The assumption was that someone would make an adjuster that would work with the stock type springs.

#7

Got it:

Adjuster=spring rubber which is what you said in the rules.
I would suggest eliminating the misleading “adjustable perch” wording.

Now, how 'bout HP ?

No Carter actually meant adjusters, as in a mechanical part. Playing with spring pads was allowed by the previous rules.

Check your email. There should be something there for you now. Let me know if you didn’t get it.

Quote “No Carter actually meant adjusters, as in a mechanical part. Playing with spring pads was allowed by the previous rules.”

I’d say that he’s over-thunk this item.

KISS=factory spring rubbers=simple=adjusters.

Oh well, maybe we simplify next year after someone has fabbed up aa part that doesn’t yet exist and sold it to a number of folks 'cause it’ll make 'em fast. Have to say I don’t see the need in this rule.

It would be interesting to see who submited the adjustable rear spring perch and how they reasoned that it would make the series safer or cheaper.

#11

There were some strong suggestions that came down from National. They are trying to keep the series inticing and current for younger racers. I’m not sure they understand our clientele.

#12

WHAT?

Folks watching our class race is what brings em in, not more rules/changes…making stuff "adjustable just adds to the amount of “work”…and generally will run people away. Hell it is hard enough just to check tire pressures for me.

I’m with Al. Adjusting things takes away from my beer drinking time. I don’t want any options for anything.

This should be the SE30 Mission Statement!

For those that ran RR’s at CMP, make sure you give your tires a close inspection. 2 of the brand new RR’s on the 190 developed the “visible thread splice”. Both tires have a “gap between the leading and trailing edges” which means I have to replace them.

Had them mounted per the instructions.

#17

Did you have them mounted and rotated per Toyo’s super double secret method? They do say it matters…

#18

The weird part is that I had mine mounted randomly last year at VIR prior to the announcement and just crossed them for rotation. 0 splicing has shown on my set.

Did you contact Toyo about it? If I have to replace brand new tires after one race weekend, I am going to be livid.

My were mounted randomly (DOT outside on each rim) at VIR as well. I ran them for the fun race last year and then ran them for 3 practice sessions two weekends ago. One of them is now showing the slit. Just got the two of them remounted (correctly) and will have to see if the slit disappears.
