Road Atlanta Race Reports

Conspicuous in our absence, Laura and I were busy as grid student/instructor match-ups were, ahhh, challenging.

My game of golf was good this past weekend. Laura’s was so/so.

Great racing and I’m hopeful that the spirit of camaraderie was strong in the paddock.

Every racer has a story. What’s yours?

Regards, Robert Patton

PS, I need a new engine for the 08 car.I read of some other engine woes. I’ll contact Thrash and see what he has for sale.Big Al??

Don’t know how it looked up front, but we were having fun in the back of the pack, especially on Sunday! Right John?

Two thoughts;

  1. I find it ironic that the ‘Throne of Mediocrity’ found it’s rightful owner in a roundabout way. Sort of like Excalibur except not as nice looking.

  2. Just from the side lines, the Sunday race with 80 cars was just so much fun to watch. I am sure it was whole lot more fun from the race seat. Great job by all the racers in keeping the spaces while going 3-4 wide through T1.

My game of golf was not too great this weekend, but the game was so damn much fun it didn’t matter. I’ll write more later… In the mean time, here are the rear view cams (settle down Jones, it’s not what you think):

Sunday’s Combined Race:

(start watching at 3 min, 25 sec… sorry bad edit in a hurry and vimeo restricts upload amounts) If your boss comes over before the 45 mins is up, make sure to watch starting at 11:45 for about 20 seconds. Brian Jones makes a nice cameo appearance in Turn 1.

Saturday’s Sprint Race:

Great shots of how much roll Jim’s car has…

The rear view cam is fun, but doesn’t tell the whole story. I’ll fill in the gaps later. It’s going to be a long, cold, angry (on forums) winter, so bunker down and brace yourselves. I have work to do on my car… Neglected maintenance is starting to rear it’s ugly head.

I’m with Craig. That was some really entertaining racing this weekend.

Thanks to (almost;)) all of you for the warm welcome into Southeast Spec E30. Here’s my video from yesterday. I had camera problems so I don’t think I got Patton’s awesome move under the bridge to protect 2nd place on Saturday. He was up on that wheel!! :woohoo:

At Skeen’s request, let me draw your attention to the unbelievable asshattery of a PT driver - around 4:00 in the video. The grass was dry, but I don’t think the back straight is the right place for that move.

Now, 10A on the start lap is a different story.

Steve D.

PS - The title in my video is wrong - there were 74 starters, not 80.

WTG Steve, that was impressive.

As usual, I had a great time racing with everybody this weekend! On Saturday I was close to the most mediocre in the region of mediocrity (9th out of 20 starting cars). Thanks to the cold temps I was able to set a personal best at Road Atlanta (just like most of us I think).

Here’s the link to my video of Saturday: http://www.vimeo.com/2459850

Pretty much the whole race was spent battling (or trying to catch up to a battle). Jones and I going into the esses on lap 1 was a bit of a pucker. I kept thinking of the story he just told about contact on lap one of another race. Racing with Laura for the first half of the race and Herrington for the second half was a blast.

Sunday started off pretty rough when I punched a hole in the oil cooler. After loading the car on the trailer, Chuck Taylor and David Herrington convinced me to fix the car and go racing… all I can say is THANKS a ton for the kick in the butt and the help getting the car fixed! Also, thanks to Al Taylor for the oil cooler delete (I’m glad you’re worried about running over possums and busting your cooler!!!).

Like everyone else said, the race Sunday was a sight to behold! I started near the back so I spent most of the time in awe of what was going on in front of me. I think ultimately I would prefer dicing it up with our own class, but that race was something to see for sure! Thanks to Mike Skeen (of mikeskeen.com) for reminding me I was going too slow at the start. I think it’s time to get rid of the plastic bumpers and get some indestructible metal ones! :woohoo:

all those vids are great!

steveD- I love the foot cam! It looks like you’re using the clutch to get better acceleration- an SM trick? Anyone else doing this?

It was not the best weekend, fun, but not a real competitive ending for MLT Racing. Thanks to the Blind Squirrels for the parts on Friday, and congrats on beating us by 16 seconds in the race. Thanks to the Geegars for the Jager, I will save it for next years first RA date, unless I can lure a 21yr old girl to the cabin with it. Thanks to team XXX for providing some competition in the enduro series, better luck in 09, you are gonna need it.

Skeen, I am gonna find a Renee’ Pierre Foosball table in Durham, and will post the video of me wooping you on this board. Skeen is the master of the cheesy German hard ball foosball.

Not sure I understand the question.

I have gotten in the horrible habit of “covering” the clutch pedal with my left foot. I love the cage, but hate how low they built a dead pedal. I actually can’t reach it.

Fabricating a new dead pedal is on the list of winter work for the car.

But, yes. I do use the clutch.:stuck_out_tongue:

Oh . I was giving you the benefit of the doubt. It looks like you are not only resting on it but also pressing on the clutch pedal lightly in many places- probably not the best thing fot it.
You had me thinking it was your secret to keeping up with skeen ;).

You remember those old cartoons where Wile E. Coyote runs off the end of the cliff and it takes him a couple seconds to realize he’s going to fall? That was me for those few laps while I kept Mike in sight.

Lap 2 :woohoo:
Lap 3
Lap 4 :frowning:

Race end

Not really happy with how my weekend turned out but it was good to be back out there.

Sat. I turned in a lackluster qualifying effort. 8th:(

The race was a little a better as I started to get my groove back. Went from 8th to fourth and thought about trying Devinney into 10a for third but decided it was a low percentage move and backed off. Traffic began to come into play letting Carlton catch up. We and had a good battle in which I would eventually lose as I went into turn 1 a little hot breifly going off. It was enough to give Carlton the place though. I finished 5th. Not what I wanted but after 6 months away I was really happy just be back out there.

Sun. was awful. I think my master cylinder took a dump because by turn 6 I was having to pump the brakes in every corner. By lap 2 I didn’t feel I could continue like that. It was not safe for me or the other drivers, especially with that many cars on track. I pulled in and called it a day.

Damion

I want my 1 hour 38 minetes back. I rented “Step Brothers” last night, after hearing your rave review on Sunday…come to think of it I think JP liked that movie also. That movie SUCKS. Teddy M3 and I could do better at my singlewide with a hand held camera.

You have no taste in movie’s, I am adding you to the list.

Be careful damion, at the least they will get dirty, worse case could be an infection. Maybe you should put them on Steve D’s car, it is pretty clean.
