Remote Start

#1

Long story short, my trailer was broken in to last night. The keys were not in the cars. That’s all the good news I can offer. What I want to do is to wire-in one of those push-to-start buttons that I will hide as a way to keep a car from starting. Can you help with the wiring information on how this is done.

Thanks in advance,

Robert Patton

Robert,
Sorry to hear about the break-in - I’ll bet it’s infuriating.

You can wire a switch to the ignition wire that goes to the steering column pretty easily, which will add another obstacle for would-be thieves. I think it’s a large yellow wire coming into the one of the harnesses on the column - I’d have to check the ETM to be sure. A previous owner had done this on my former street M3…of course, he bungled it up, and the car often wouldn’t start because of a bad connection on the wire.

Good luck!

I’m sure you’ve thought of this, but I’d be especially careful about blocking in the trailer so someone can’t steal and take the cars off somewhere to start at their leisure. If they scouted it out and took keys, they probably plan to come back.

I hope everything comes together in time for the weekend.

Why not just pull the main relay? The causal thief isn’t likely to have one of those handy. Nor would they be likely to notice its absence.

If you want to do a "push to start" with a hidden switch, interrupting the clutch/neutral safety circuit will do the trick.

Sorry Robert, that sucks.

How about just pulling the kill switch when not in use?

Also, Look at Eric Nissen’s car we wired a nifty push button start on it a couple of years ago.

Robert - sorry to hear of the break in. Hope they didn’t get away with anything of great value to you.

It sounds like they did NOT get the keys - right? If so, if you want to hide a toggle switch somewhere, you could easily tap into a coil lead. You probably already did so when you wired up your kill switch. Best of luck,
Ed

I know that just pulling one of the small terminal leads off my kill switch will not allow the car to start (cranks but no start). That’s a pretty subtle thing (he says in a lame attempt to justify the tow and repair bill to diagnose the wire being knocked off…)
cheers,
bruce

Robert, that is lousy. Real sorry to hear about it. Not sure how much of your gear/tools/spares they got, but if you need stuff for this weekend, why not post up a list here and see who can help out with some loaner items?

None of my E30’s ever had a clutch/neutral safety circuit.

That really sucks. Enclosed trailer with two cars? Do you park away from home?
Anyways, sorry about any loss. The kill switch will do just fine, at least that’s my belief. The same with quick disconnect steering wheel. If I have to leave the car outside (open trailer) I take the battery inside the garage, but they really don’t want to mess with my trailer since I park next to my window, and I wake up easy and have my gun handy (don’t mind target practice in the middle of the night)

Black with Yellow is the main power IIRC. Mine got severed at the end of the day at road atlanta last year for some reason. The car did quit running. I didn’t figure it out until I got the car back home.

When I saw the thread, I thought…starting your Spec e30 with your cell phone from inside the house… Now that is BLING!

Sucks about the break in, what does insurance do for you in a deal like this?
