Read this is you have early gas tank

While on the way home from a 800 mile road trip in my 87 325iC I was pulling into a truck stop in VA on I 95…A ford explorer driver pulls up frantically waving, seems I was soaking down the parking lot with gas. I had filled up 40 miles up the road, gauge was below half…Upon checking it out (Rainy, dark, truck stop lot…) I find the molded hose between the pump and filter had split, DAMN. These hoses run at such an angle that the factory molded piece is about all that will work correctly, and they never get changed, plus they kind of take a beating when the filter gets changed. Anyway, I had a spare pump in the trunk, with filter and bracket attached, so 20 mins later I am back on the road. Moral is, if you have the early 2 pump system, Change those molded fuel hoses back there with new factory hoses, put it on your winter maintenece lists. When that hose splits you can drain your tank on the track pretty quick.

I have replaced every hose on my 89 that carries fuel. It’s good advice but it really was a PIA

This happened to me at Road Atlanta earlier this year. I think someone had dropped the tank and pinched the hose putting it back up, but in any case, the hose was worn though and leaked when the car was full.

I caught that one while doing maintenance after purchase. The one I didn’t find until it was pissing on my driveway was the main line up to the fuel rail at the front of the car. Not a place you want a bad fuel hose. Replaced that AND the return line. These hoses are OLD now; replace 'em!

Wow, what timing!

My '87 recenly had its fuel tank and ALL rubber hoses replaced. Fuel leaks suck but I think I’m good for the next 20 years
