Ranger's repaint the car thread

#1

Car left for Maaco this morning.

Passenger door came off of the parts car I bought for it’s engine 3yrs ago. Fenders and hood came from the parts car I bought in May. Maaco will be bondoing the damage to the rear quarter panel.

I had been planning on doing the painting myself. I’d prepped the fenders and hood, and bought paint, gun, bondo, sheetplastic, etc. But prepping the fenders and hood gave me a new appreciation for just how much work was involved in prepping the car and I started losing enthusiasm.

At first I just talked to Maaco about doing the bondo effort but they were willing to paint the car for not a helova lot more than I’d paid for materials. At that point I kinda said “screw it, I’ll just let them paint the darn thing”.

Color will be unchanged.

New decals will be inbound shortly. They’ll look the same as the old decals, but I’m playing around with a couple new ideas too.

To my surprise I found that '86 fenders aren’t quite the same as '87 fenders. There’s a couple attachment points at the rear of our fenders, close to the doors. The sheetmetal near these attachment points was different and I had to do some cutting, test fitting, cutting, test fitting, cutting, and test fitting to get it to work.

Make sure you tell the painter that you want the car glossy…that is NOT a given!!! Dark cars look nice, but lighter is much cooler. Chuck

People still spray paint cars?
Man up (and watch the faces of your neighbors as you use these in the driveway).

I definitely didn’t want to see the faces of my neighbors as I pressure washed my old paint job off the car in the culdesac then proceeded to sweep up the bigger pieces. By the way I spent about 2 hours trying to do some body work on the car before taking it to the painter, and that was all I could take. I will never attempt body work again, it is definitely something I am willing to let the pros do.
