Race car rental feeler.

Jeff and I are toying with the idea of building / buying a second race car and putting it up as a rental unit. This has proved popular out in the Pacific NW where I spent a few years, and I wonder if it would do well here. Out there the car was about $800 for the weekend. Chime in and let us hear your opinion / ideas.

Good idea. Been there, done that…how is your liability insurance? Do you own a house? A car? Anything of value? Call and I can give you the details,800-755-1715. Robrt Patton

I know someone else who rented race cars out and he never did much more than break even. There’s always something wearing out and "renters" don’t treat the equipment like you would. Of course, there’s the liability, for the people renting @ $800, do they bring a certified check to cover the replacement cost to the track? Most guys scraping together don’t have $12K lying around in liquid capital that’s readily available get in the form of a certified check to bring to the track. If they don’t you are exposing yourself to a capital loss for sure when something unintended happens.

IMHO - It’s a lot of hassle for no or little profit. Who’s going to babysit the renter all weekend and make sure that when something does break, he get’s it fixed promptly? Are you willing to give up your racing focus to deal with this. I’d love to instruct at NASA on race weekends, but I just can’t afford the risk of the car needing some little thing and having my student hounding me to get out on the track. I think the same applies ot the rental scenario.

If for some reason you do decide to do it, let me know, I ran the administration/logistics for a Grand-Am team for a couple years and have a pretty solid rental contract.

Me and I’m sure many others have thought the same. I asked others who have tried it and the same answer came up. "It’s not a profitable business venture."
