RA Stories and videos

I’ll get it started.

Two cons first:

  1. Rain, but hey…
  2. The 01 Porsche painted up like the general lee. He needs serious help.

Pros:
Pretty much everything else. Great racing as always, great gatherings, great crowd. Set my personal best time after shaking off the cobwebs. Had an AWESOME battle in PTD with Paul and Ty on Sunday. What’s blast. Congrats to El Zarigüeya (The Possum) for sweeping the weekend and to AR for the HC wins. Can’t wait to see you guys again at RA next time. Hope to have videos with colorful language soon.

What a great weekend! Big field of 24?

We had 3 newbies. That totally kicks ass. I think that’s the most newbies we’ve ever had in a single month.
Alex Borroso is a buddy of Aaron’s.
Paul Bacon came to us via Porsche land.
Ty Young is a SCCA guy with a lot of experience.

Alex and Paul were in comp school Friday. Ty got is comp license based on his SCCA ticket.

The weekend started out a little rough. I found a big screw in one of my trailer tires as I was doing last minute checks before leaving Savannah.

Saturday was kinda lame. Qual was a zero. My 7yr old rain tires are hard as rocks and having skipped the rainy practice, I was just out there seeing if the car worked. The only guys I beat in Qual were those that slept in. Really, lol, I mean it. Look at the grid sheet.

Saturday’s race was fun, but it was short. A Thunder Roadster got beat up at the green. This was a start group ahead of us, so we never even got the start. It took 10min to clean up the mess. I spent most of that time chuckling over the flag confusion. First Red and Yellow for a restart, then double-yellow for a restart, then the Green came at the Tower, not down the front straight like we were expecting.

10min later more Thunder Roadsters had trouble and we went to FCY while that mess got cleaned up.

The restart was fun. There were 4 of us behind 2 Miatas. The Green got thrown as the SpecE30’s were just topping the hill under the bridge so we charged forward. The Miatas were slow on the uptake. The SpecE30s charged into the Miatas at the exit of 12. I think we were 6 wide as we all passed the Miatas pretty much simultaneously. I had a big grin on my face.

We had a great time Saturday night. Thanks to AR for the steaks. So awesome.

Sunday Qual went well. Most everyone had trouble getting clear track, except for me. The track was damp and drying. I made a calculated decision to drive like the track was dry except for staying off exit gators. I ended up Qualifying 5th which given the side of the field, is like some kinda magical shit. 2 of us chose to try out the turn 5 exit gator but that worked poorly for them. Incredibly, damage was minor.

Sunday’s race was a blast. I had lots of really fast guys behind me so it was going to be a matter of losing as few places as possible. Most of the race went pretty darn well for me. There was some close calls when folks passed me and I had to give them some room so we could all survive. The scariest one was in turn 1. There was a 2 car train trying to take the turn from me on the inside and I was determined to not slow down more than necessary. I didn’t want both cars to take me. I barely held on to the track.

A couple laps later I had Issa in front of me and Sandro behind. I didn’t know what Sandro was doing back there, but once he caught up, I waved him by like I usually do. He went up and fought with Issa a bit, but didn’t seem to be trying very hard to pass him. It looked to me like Sandro had decided to just play with Issa for a bit instead of continuing his charge to the front. Sandro passed Issa. I was chuckling at Sandro’s hijinks.

I quit driving hard. I figured if they were just going to play around, there was no sense me taking it seriously.

As we came around for the White flag, Sandro, slowed down and let issa catch back up and pass him.

The checker flew. I caught up to Sandro so we could exchange hand signals and silly grins. Which is when I saw that it was the newby Alex Barroso, not Sandro. Holy shit. I’d waved by a rookie fresh out of comp school. I’d not just, with a couple laps to go, rolled over like a patsy, I’d actually waved him by. Sigh.

Now that’s funny.

Quick question, how do most of you feel about slower traffic out there? It was my first race weekend ever out there in a car I have never driven blah blah blah. The was some pretty tight passes on me but that doesn’t bother me a bit. I tried to give everyone room as to not mess their race up. Do you guys feel it just part of the race or does it piss you off? I know my speed will come with seat time I’m just curious how you guy felt about it. In motorcycle racing using lap traffic to mess with competitors was part of the fun. I have won a few races pinching off a newbie in a corner to put space on another rider.

Jason, what does your car look like?

Re. how do I feel about slower traffic. Well, I often am the slower traffic.

What follows are personal opinions, and not any attempt to express a consensus opinion.

I am entirely good with slower SpecE30’s. The guys at the tip of the pack are crazy fast, most of us are in the middle, and there’s some that are slow. The guys on the podium are not some kind of nobility such that they have more value then the rest of us. The slow guys are as much SpecE30 as the fast guys. For someone to criticize another SpecE30 driver solely because the latter was slow would be unreasonable.

That said, slow guys need to do their very best to be predictable and maintain good situational awareness. Fast guys will be coming thru and trying to read the mind of the slow guy and predict what he is going to do. Altho fast guy making the pass is obligated to make it safely, human nature ensures that fast guy is probably thinking “he sees me coming”…which is where problems can occur.

Don’t pinch off newbies. They might react unexpectedly so give them a little extra space.

I got to thinking about this a bit more. There may be an age issue here.

When youngsters get into a sport a heirarchy is created where the guys that are really good get to thinking that they’re more important then their peers that suck. The youngsters haven’t really accomplished anything yet in their lives so the fact that they’re good at becomes really important in that group. They start imagining themselves to be a noble caste within that group. Their peers that suck become a lesser caste.

Doesn’t really apply with us tho. We’re not young. Well, most of us aren’t. Most everyone here has accomplished something elsewhere, so our ego can absorb the fact that we aren’t on the podium. As a result, it’s less likely that an informal caste system occurs where those that suck might perceive themselves as doormats.

Fast Guy: "Gress, you suck because you are slow."
Me: “Yes, but my penis is 12” long."
Fast Guy: <silence. birds chirping>

I was actually in a Porsche not an E30. I joined the forum because at the time i had an E30 but still come back on here because I just love the cars.

I think I have pretty good situational awareness from the motorcycle racing. The bikes have no mirrors and that in itself can make for interesting situations. They teach you to be predictable, keep your line and the faster guys will make it past. Comp school wasn’t a lot of fun in the rain all day Friday, Saturdays Lightning was was crazy as you all know and Sunday my car broke in qualifying and at the start of the race but I still had a blast. I’m in it to learn and most importantly have fun.

I’m in a red Porsche, hopefully I never do anything to mess up another persons race but if I do come find me. It helps if you know what your doing wrong.

I deleted my post. No sense looking like a knucklehead if it’s easily avoidable.

Scott, I think you’ve got the wrong car in mind.

The last issue of SpeedNews (Pg 64) says the Cayman is owned by Ira Ferguson.

#11

Yeah wrong car for sure. I’m in a red 944, supper clean but far from the nicest car in lightning :D. I don’t have a passenger seat but hopefully I can learn by following a faster driver a few corners at a time.

Sigh. Good catch.

I am clearly lost. I should just stay out of this thread.

#13

Yeah that’s the guy. He says, and I quote: “…the only problem with the car is the guy behind the wheel.” Nailed it.

#14

Race leaders, how about you post your videos? I need to see what happened up front so I can write the article for SpeedNews. If you don’t post your video, the world won’t know how fabulous you are.

The 10a/b miata incident had me laughing hysterically!!!

I’m the new guy, Alex (I also go by Sandro, at least in Scott’s world I do). I had a great rookie weekend from comp school, to the fun race and everything in between. Unfortunately the Saturday race was filled with out of class traffic that left me a little salty. That TR that spun in 7 almost left me with a bent up car too. I made plenty of rookie mistakes over the weekend, but I guess that’s to be expected. There was an especially obvious mistake at the end of the Sunday race.

I tried my hand at a Gress-esque commentary video for the Sunday race. Didn’t come out as great as I would have liked, but it’s decent enough. If you don’t watch the entirety of the race, I highly suggest you watch the last two and a half minutes or so if you want to chuckle at the stupid new guy:

Not so successful of a weekend. The drive by produced no injuries to rival racing teams. Group3racing will be more prepared next time.
Great to meet the new blood and for what I saw everyone drove clean. For what its worth Alex, consider a side net and visor down.
As for the rookie I am, I started early Saturday morning forgetting that I started the car to warm it up and overheated the motor leaving me with a oil leak from the cam shaft seal or head.
I followed that up by going out in the rain without a fuse for the wipers. The race was fun. Got to run with some newbies and my gangster bud Issa working my way from the back to P10. Sorry about the pucker moment in 12 Retey, I was committed and dropped 2 wheels to get through. Sunday, I qualified P15 and the car was weakening but still capitalized on traffic and made my way to 6th but something gave way possibly in the rear and I limped in with 3 to go.
No worries, Big fun with a great group. Hopefully Scott will help me get the issues cleared up to return soon.
Video still in car and may retrieve someday.

Sunday’s Race:
I started in the back because I missed qualifying. Good clean racing on the first lap. I got squeezed off track between 5 and 6 but no damage done. Don’t think the guy saw me coming up along side him. I put my new skid plate to the test and did a little offroading in 7 midway through the race. Skid plate worked flawlessly but my volvo splitter did not fair so well. Nothing a quick trip to the junkyard cant fix! As always, great racing with the SE crew.

Really enjoyed meeting all the Spec e30 guys. Kudos to Scott for lunch Sat, and AR for putting up with the crew. Chuck
