\"The Rock\" Report

#1

We had a wet one hour enduro yesterday…and of course my rains were at home as the forecast was for a great weekend, anyway I had a pretty good race. Robert finished 9th, me 11th, and Travis Wilson 13th. My fastest lap was less than a tenth from Robert’s and Travis was 2 sec back, which means he drove a consistent and mistake free race to finish 13th. He also still has an old "e" motor in the car…I will go ahead and say he will be the 2007 Spec e30 rookie of the year. There were lots of cars spinning and some just quit, I am proud to say that even with slicks on the Spec e30’s stayed on track. I had a great race with a Miata, we used traffic to pass each other and I was really happy to slip by him on the white flag lap.

I am not sure what happened on Saturday as I do not have any of the sheets…I know Robert beat me in the sprint, and I remember seeing Gasman "beached" in the great pumpkin race but do not know how we finsihed…Robert?

Anyway the weather was great on Saturday and perfect for camping in the Volvo once again. There seemed to be lots of other spec e30 cars in the DE…Steve540i’s cage is the nicest/safest I have seen, his car seemed to be running pretty good, what time did you end up with??

I did a 1:18.2 on the last session on Sunday with a passenger and a full tank. So based on my weight on Satuday with me in the car (2864), I was weighing at least 3050 when I ran that time and was driving at 8/10’s.

The big question is whether or not losing 300lbs and driving a little closer to the limit would shave 7-8 seconds off of that time thereby putting me in the range of you and Robert.

Travis did run an excellent race considering the wet conditions. He put a fender alongside Al at the start of the race and I believe he could have taken Al if not for the e motor in his car (smile Al!).

Steve, 300 pounds less will get you 3 seconds per lap, driving 10/10s will get you another 2 seconds and putting a number on the side of the car is good for2-3 seconds. You’re there! Thanks for comming out to help instruct and I look forward to racing with you next year. If I can help with car questions just call at 800-755-1715. Regards Robert Patton

Had a fun weekend out there, and watching the race was a blast. The spec cars out there looked quite fast!

Al, re: the sandtrap, still not sure how that happened. I hit the brakes going into three just like I had a dozen other times and the car kept going straight as I tried to turn. I thought I had saved it in the grass but realized the counter move was trouble too. I’m just glad the sand was there to catch me as the guard rail behind it was approaching all too fast.

Gasman, Rockingham is a tricky place, sorry I was not of much help, I was not sure what I would have to contend with…The tricky thing about 3 is that even if you make it into the corner, you still have to get out…it seems there were a lot of cars that spun on the exit or the middle or the corner, I think a lot of that is the car getting unsettled in the transistion or getting too far out in the middle/back of the corner and getting in the marbles.

Al, No problem buddy, I understand…now that I see you won third place in the SE and I finished fourth. I keep learning how this stuff works. I’m going after you next year though.
