Question on picking up a car to turn into SpecE30

#1

What is the typical mileage of the cars you all are picking up? I just started looking for a candidate and it seems that many of them are pushing 200K and over.

How long should these motors last and what mileage should I be looking for? I realize each car is different and that I will need to check compression, but what is the general rule?

KP, I’m a relative newby, but I recall this being addressed a couple times in other threads. I think that 140k miles might be in the ballpark of average, and that 180k is not unusual.

Junk yard motors sell for $700, if the motor should fail, it really isn’t a big deal. I wouldn’t be too concerned about mileage at all since every piece of the suspension will be replaced. JMHO.

I agree mileage shouldn’t be your main concern as long as you can find a decent rust free version I would go for it. You can worry about the motor later. Mine had 140000K and although it doesn’t have the greatest dyno numbers in the world it is still decent and the car is competitive. Many on this board are racing with motors in the 200K range, some have gotten rebuilds but you can still get in there and mix it up with a high mileage motor. You could probably change the timing belt, have the head freshened and go racing. Good luck.

Cool, thanks. Luckily I’m in Phoenix, so rust isn’t usually an issue. My worries were more around finding a decent car, then having to replace/rebuild the motor just as I was getting out of HPDE and into Spec E30. If junkyard motors are that inexpensive, shouldn’t be too bad.

I did do some searching and plenty of reading but didn’t really see this covered. Plenty more reading to do, though!
