Pot O Gold Smack talk

#1

It’s time…

CMP is behind us and we’ve beaten what happened to death. Road Atlanta will be here shortly. Who else is in? Myself and m3bill are in for the Enduro (and we won’t blow our fuel stop this time) and I’m in for the sprints. Dunno if Bill Z. will have a replacement engine in in time or not. Maybe we need to organize another on-track engine swap?

I’ll be running in AI/X but look what Smack Talk I found in GRM:

#3

No more trackside engine swaps.

Fun, but not that much fun. Learned a few things.

Regards, Robert Patton

PS, Jim Levie, the fuel return line/fuel pump return did not solve the high idle, too much fuel problem. The tank is comming off of the car soon. Thanks for your help.

Jim Pantas, leave room in the trailer for the Panther. It will be ready for RA as I intend to try it out the weekend prior to our NASA event at the BMWCCA school.

Try this… Point the return from the FPR into an empty five gallon fuel jug. If the engine then starts and idles normally, you know for certain whether the problem is in the supply or return side.

With a little practice, we could get really good at track side engine swaps. Taking it to the extreme, we could make it a timed event (with a trophy). Now that’s something I could win…

#5

Jim, thanks for the obvious return line test idea. I ain’t so bright.

Now, back to RA smack talk…

Regards, Robert Patton

All the rookies watch out - this time I’m coming to take the rookie trophy!

I plan to be present and full accounted for at RA. After grabbing 8th on Sunday at CMP and the car is running great…I’m shooting for some 6th place booty!

Also see my thread about a new bumper and taillight.

#9

I’m planning to be there Friday and hang out. Maybe mess with the comp schoolers if JimP will have me.

If anybody needs crew help for the enduro, I’m available.

#10

I’m in for Saturday and Sunday Sprints… Not 100% sure what all I’ll have done on the car by the time I show up, (body work, short off season and work schedule have impeded my winter maintenance project list) but I’m racing…

And I’ll also be available to help with Enduro teams in need of crew help

#11

who’s planning to race the weekend?

It seems like it’s been so long… I’m looking forward to being beaten by anyone.

11 people so far. That’s pretty good. And only a couple of Spec Miatas - strange, there was at least 20 of them at VIR.

So, I’ve never been to RA before, any advise?

Watch this 100 times!!

I just registered and am hoping to have the car ready for the weekend. A few winter projects yet to do… actually all of them as I haven’t really touched the car since November.

No trash talk, just fingers crossed the car doesn’t break.

Kelley,

Do you think you’ve got the clutch issue figured out?

Sign up for test day and DE4. It is one of my very favorite tracks, but there are lots of blind crests that - at least for me - took a lot of seat time to even figure out where I wanted to be on the track.

Doesn’t look like we will have too many Miatas, but we run very similar lap times. They are significantly faster from T1 to T5 and we are faster from T7 to T10A.

If you have a Miata relatively close on your tail entering 1, watch for them to try to pass you somewhere between T2/3 and down through the esses. It is a good track to cooperate with other cars on. There aren’t many places where side by side works. There are lots of walls. Did I mention it’s one of my favorites? :woohoo:

Yes & No… I ended up doing a complete driveline swap (all the way back to the diff) from a doner car last fall. I drove at a DE in October starting with other people driving it first (to eliminate suspected driver error on my part). After other people put about two hours of time on the car I drove it for the rest of the weekend without incident. No hints of pressure plate failure with over three hours of time on the car.

In addition to that, I drove Chuck’s car in the 8 hour enduro last December and didn’t blow up the clutch. That was 1 and a half hours of driving.

Considering the pressure plates were going in less than an hour of drive time, I think I have it fixed even though we never figured out what the cause was.
