Painting my car.......which color?

#1

I’m having my car painted soon and I am trying to decide which color. I have narrowed it down to 3 color choices. Two are BMW colors: Leguna Seca Blue and Techno Violet and the other is Ford GT orange.

At this time I like the Ford GT orange and my second choice is Techno. Maybe I can do orange with two wide racing stripes down the center in Techno. The color matches aren’t perfect but pretty close. Note that the model e30 is not mine, just a picture that I stole from Roadfly. What do you guys think?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I would vote for "None of the above."

Of the three choices, I like the orange, but I’d like it a little brighter.

I’m also in love with the Ford GT orange. I was thinking of an orange and black scheme. If you choose that blue, I’ll do whatever I can to be in front of you so I won’t have to look at it. GO DUKE!

Ken:

I suggest looking at photo galleries of the various pro sports car racing websites to get an idea about how other teams choose colors.

I chose bright yellow because I like the Corvette C5R and because I want a color that is easy to spot.

And some colors can give a different feeling on a street car vs. a race car. I love gun-metal gray on a street car but it didn’t look good on my first Spec E30 car. I like my yellow race car but yellow would be way down the list for my street cars. You can also try adding numbers to the sample photos to see how they look as race cars.

Regardless, choose whatever color you like. That’s part of the fun of having your own race car.

One more thing…it’s interesting how you get a different feeling after having your race car painted a color that you chose, compared to a color chosen by the factory.

have you thought about a BMW orange e.g. Inka from the 70’s
Check out an example here: (look down the page)
http://www.bmwcsregistry.org/photographs/30csl/30csl_TimOConnor.html

The Jagermeister cars were either Inka or Phoenix Orange (varying accounts).
BMW had some wild colors in the 70’s - turkis, taiga, golf - I put together a bunch of paint examples at
http://www.bmwcsregistry.org/Coupe_Information/e9paint.html
when I used to run that web site (I used to have a Verona coupe, may it RIP (rear ended by a honking big Dodge Ram)).
It’s also fun to look at the various DTM M3’s and their paint schemes for ideas.
cheers,

Here is an example of an E30 with Jagermeister livery.

Chris,

Thanks for the links and ideas. I would much prefer to use a BMW color than a FORD. Its really orange but it will definitely stand out. Give me something to think about.

The Inka is sweet.

I have seen many race cars painted beautiful street colors, Avus blue, techno, etc, the main problem is on a racetrack, you just can’t see them. They don’t stand out at all.

You need to have your car as bright as possible. I vote for the orange. Plus, with Carter’s and Carltons, you can start finishing off all the colors that make up the rainbow flag. I bet you would all like that!

You might also want to find a color that’s close to a racer’s tape color and that you can easily touchup with a rattlecan. (Generally, that means no metallics.)
