OT: Will Race for Food

…Well, it’s not quite that bad, but it’s getting there. (Besides, based on my talent and the car’s current shape, I probably wouldn’t even earn a Quarter-Pounder, throughout the course of the season.)

Basically, as some of you know, I need a job, and for whatever reason or another, over the course of the last 6 months, I haven’t found one and none have found me. Since leaving my job in D.C. and moving to N.C. (ostensibly to get married, but before I can buy a ring, I need a reliable job), every lead I’ve followed has either turned out to be too-good-to-be-true or has dried up, and my savings are running low, as Katie and I are not-quite scraping by on her salary, alone.

So, forgoing my pride, I’m asking for the help of the SpecE30 community…

If you know of anyone in the Research Triangle Park-area (or anywhere within ~50 miles of Durham, NC), who could use my skills, I’d appreciate a heads-up or if you forwarded my information.

A PDF of my resumé can be found here: http://www.dvsmith.net/about/resume/

Essentially, I’m a jack-of-all-trades: I’ve conducted research and written analyses on everything from cutting-edge information warfare scenarios, to historical conflicts to domestic counter-terrorism tactics, hired and ran a series of research teams; I oversaw an IT team and directed a massive restructuring and re-design of a multi-thousand page website (twice); I’ve been interviewed by a nationally syndicated radio program and foreign television journalists; I’ve edited and produced books and periodical publications and I’ve overseen everything from high-level Pentagon briefings, to visits from foreign heads of state and dignitaries, to fomenting dialogues between civic, industrial and elected leaders. And besides that, I’m a halfway decent sports and editorial photographer.

I’m a quick-learner, a published author and a strong communicator. I have a passion for history.

Thanks in advance for any assistance…

[size=1](Please note that I’ve never had a formal security clearance, but given that, amongst other things I’ve been cleared as a non-escort visitor to the West Wing of the White House, Pentagon, NSA, DHS and TSA on multiple occasions, I don’t believe it will be all that difficult of a proposition, if needed.) Dan,

Keep your chin up buddy. I know it can be very difficult to be out of work so long without any solid prospects. I don’t think that I would be much help to you since I’m a GC and know absolutely nothing about National Defense. Based on your qualifications it sounds like your best job pool is going to be where you just came from…DC. Sorry, I know that is no help to you.

Have you looked into something like web design or even taking a temp job in something different to see if you have an interests. I wish I could help you out but don’t give up, something will come up for sure.

Dan, I think I am the expert of finding a job or just lucky. I’ve had 6 different jobs in the last 2 years. I live in Winchester,VA. (close to DC). The last five jobs were initiated by recruiters calling me. Not the best way, referrals are BEST. I accepted a contract job at Fannie Mae in June, which I was assured was a long term contract. I left a permanent full time position for this job. Well early Dec, I lost my job due to budget cuts. My last day was 12/22 and I had 6 interviews the following 2 weeks, and I accepted a job at the Wash Metro Airport authority. I start on Monday. I have marketed myself on career web sites. Give me a call and I might be able to give you some idea’s if you haven’t used web recruiters for some job searching. I’m at 540-533-9660. I’m pretty available this week.

Dan,

With your design background… you might want to search the advertising and graphic design trade ads.

That’s the business I’m in and we’re SLAMED, as are most of the other agencies and firms.

Check these out:

http://www.creativehotlist.com/

I’ve got a list of other sites and resources on my home computer. I’ll forward that to you tonight.

Best of Luck!
Scott

JP, if it pays enough to feed, clothe, and allow me to break even on other expenses… and tinker with the race car, wine doesn’t sound horrible…

Anybody know if any local (VIR/RTP-area) race teams need someone who can scmoose sponsors, massage the media and lure potential "donors"???
