Robert,
Thanks for asking - it was a great weekend!
A string of last minute dropouts hurt our attendence, but Steve Kappy and I still had some good solid racing at the Beaver.
The bad:
- Alex hurt his back vacationing in Italy, and could barely walk, so he was out.
- Stephen was on vacation the week before and just couldn’t get his car ready in time.
- Han was planning to make up our group of five, but had a last minute job obligation.
The good:
Steve and I made the 4+ hour trip to Beaver Run. We ran our practices and qualifying together in hopes of ganging up on the GTS boys. Laptimes got better over the course of the day, and during the race, I broke into the high 1:09’s. The race itself saw kappy grid up right behind me, with the fastest GTS 1 competitor (a 944) right in front of me. I got a great start, and blew by the 944. I had some great racing with a USTCC Audi (driven by David Fletcher). I put a few carlengths on him, but my brakes started to go soft, and by the time the white flag came out, he was on my butt. Some lapped traffic got in my way coming out of the last turn on the last lap, and David got a great jump on me, but I had the inside coming into the all-out little left-hand kink, and just eeked him out by a couple feet - Margin of victory was .013 seconds!!!
The Final Result for the first ever Spec E30 race with OH/IN was:
- Vic Hall
- Steve Kappy
We would have finished 1st and 4th in GTS 1 (and those guys have similar Power to Weight, but run Hoosiers!)
We got to hang out with the GTS folks and chat about the different series’. I was a little surprised that they don’t run a spec tire. It made me glad we do it the way we do with Spec E30!
The ugly:
Sunday was shaping up to be just like Saturday. Steve and I qualified in roughly the same spots, and we both got good jumps on the competition, but my race was cut short by a broken tie-rod in my 3rd lap. I guess the parts fatigue (and my oversight on a part that should have been replaced) finally set in, and I was forced to watch the action from behind a tire-wall. I got to watch Steve battle with some of the GTS 944’s, which provdided some good entertainment.
Final Result on Sunday:
- Steve Kapuschansky
- Victor Hall
It was a fun weekend, and I can only imagine how much fun it will be as more Spec E30’s make their way North. I hope we get a nice little crowd at Mid-Ohio on August 12-13!!
