My first try with vimeo. I’m having trouble with the race but I have my best lap from quali on sunday. You can sort of see what skeen is doing in front of me, too.
race to come later…
As can be seen in the Saturday race videos, it was a bad day for Team Hunt.
I was pleased to be on the front row again (it has been a while) but must admit that Skeen was only 1/10th behind me and Skip was 1/10th behind Skeen. Oh…and I was 1/10th behind Cobetto, according to what I was told - I never looked at the sheet.
Anyway, we were all right there together, time-wise.
After leading lap one, I made minor contact with Cobetto coming out of turn one on the second lap and I had to get out of it to stay on the track. Skeen and Skip went through as well and I found myself in 4th. No problem, we have several laps to go and I’m competitive this weekend. Plus, this is a fun race so I’m not really concerned about finishing positions. I just want a fun race at the front.
As I followed Skip down through the shoot, I tracked-out a little too far and dropped two wheels off to the left. Cobetto, Skeen, and Skip were under hard braking and seeing that I would t-bone a car or two if I kept going straight, I yanked the wheel to the right and spun off to the right. I did a 180-degree spin and the left front hit the tirewall/dirt bank at about 80 mph, and at about a 30 degree angle. The left rear tank-slapped the bank and the car lifted off the ground a bit, as it continued to rotate. It stopped with the driver door open.
I didn’t want to cause a full course yellow and ruin everyone’s race so I pulled forward about 50 feet and until the car would not stay straight and off the dirt bank.
I got out of the car and saw that the entire left side of the car was crushed, the rear quarter glass was gone, and the left tie rod was snapped-off, thus the steering problem.
After getting the car home, I discovered a bent left front frame rail and the left side of the trunk floor/rear tire inner fender are deformed. It looks like the tub is a goner so I’m thinking about swapping everything over to my spare car, a straight '89 four-door. It’ll be a good winter project.
After the crash, I felt fine and still do, two days later. All the safety gear worked perfectly.
Thanks to the guys who helped get it positioned on the trailer.

sat:
going into the weekend, I thought I would be a realistic 5th place. Cobetto, Skeen, and Skip would probably checkout and Carter had been on fire lately. I would be between them and the rest of the field. I qualified 5th with a 28.7- noone very close in times in front or behind. I ended up having a great race with jason mahoney (drivegear rental) who managed to run consistent laps a lot faster than his quali time. We were back and forth but I ended up beating him for 4th behind (ok, way behind) skeen in 3rd. Cobetto won with skip in second. When Carter wrecked on lap 2 (see my vid), I felt so bad for him that I wanted to pit. Anyway, it looks like he’ll be making a strong comeback for next season.
sun:
Qualified 4th with another 28.7 More great racing with jason mahoney. I was cranking out 29.0’s and trying to keep him close. I was super close on the last lap when I spun in some oil in T9:( . I saw the wrecked cars and the flags, but when I looked all I saw on the track was dirt. It wasn’t until I was on top of it that I saw the slimy stuff running down the apex through the dirt . No damage, finished 6th. Skeen won with cobetto not far behind.
I felt like I didnt drive very well this weekend. I think it was a case of over-driving the tires. I was extremely consistent for laptimes so maybe it was just all my car was capable of? Its difficult to know. Sometimes I can hang up front but this was not one of those weekends for whatever reason. I still got some great racing experience from dicing with jason mahoney. Thanks to all for a pretty good weekend.
As usual I’m looking foward to the next one
Glad you are ok. I guess one bright point is that at least it happened at the end of the season. Is the new car going to be painted yellow as well? You might confuse Shannon if you aren’t driving a yellow car
Rallen,
I just watched your video and really enjoyed it. That moment you had with the 944 at 15:20 was exciting.
I am surprosed to see the 944s catching and running away from the E30s. I know they are slicker aerodynamically, turn better, and stop better but they only had 147 crank HP. I used to race one and they were yawn slow down the straights. Are they allowed to tweak their motors a bit?
Don
There are a few different 944 classes. I dont really understand the difference but some of them (turbos I think) are very fast and others are very slow. Driver quality in se30 seems to be far superior from my experience, but that guy in the #17 I was racing with seemed to know what he was doing.

Let’s see how I might rephrase those thoughts: The machinery can be repaired, but the physical stuff…glad there are no worries about the physical stuff.

Since we have a limited # of se30 vids, check out this one from the 944 start:

Carter: I came down the shoot to see you hitting the tires…so glad to know your ok and that you’ve got a second car…
RobertA…nice hands, just saw the vid where your behind the 944 and Jason is on the right behind the e36//quick thinking on
that pass thru 1… was also was exciting watching you guys
from the exit of T8 on Sat…although I would not advise anyone else to chose that spot! ( I went off two wheels over the curb and spun loosening the battery cable and so the car wouldn’t start…very glad you, jason, and espicially Chris C and Skip didnt get any closer!!)
2nd and 3rd that. Glad you’re alright. Looks a bit like Shady B’s car did after VIR last year.
Keep us posted on your rebuild.
