New Windshield

#1

Getting ready for VIR, last thing I need to do is get a new windshield put in (Somehow I didn’t think about the giant crack in it all winter). All the places that I have found to replace it only have green tinted glass with a green shade band on top. Has anybody else used the green tinted glass? If so how “tinted” is it? Also, does anyone know of a supplier for clear glass? The glass in the car now is all clear and I would like to replace it with a clear one if possible. Thanks.

glass is glass IMO

the tint at the top should be a non-issue… most of us have a window banner 10"-12" wide at the the top any way.

You may want to get in touch with Steven540i. He goes through 3 windshields a season  once you get your glass put in… you may want to get Factory 3 Performances’ windshield film.

I got a $120 windshield last year. Anyone have better deals than that? I’ve got a big crack in mine and plan to swap it out for a new one and cover it up with film.

Glass Masters in Raleigh has new installed windshields for $135. The glass is by Pilkenton? I had it installed in my e46 and seems to be good quality except for when I come to a stop and the engine heat causes some funky waviness in the glass. Obviously this wouldn’t be an issue with a race car.

The two replacements I used were both used OEM windshields. I’m going back with OEM since I can get one new at the BMW dealership for $160 and install it myself in 15 minutes.

I installed one of my windshields at the track last year (VIR) and it got cracked the very same day. Rockingham was responsbile for the other two windshields. I will definitely go with the protective film this time around.

And, to save this new glass you should protect it with a windshield tear-off. The Factory 3 guy has 'em in stock. I’ve tested the tear off on both cars last year and they work great…new glass for '08, new tear-off; new glass, new tear-off, etc.

I had ordered the film before I even started calling shops for glass  Speaking of the film, I’m guessing stickers have no issues sticking to it, am I right? Also, does rain-x work at all on it?

This time around (maybe I’ll get lucky and this will be the last time) I’ll just have a glass shop install it. I’m a bit pressed for time and haven’t replaced one myself yet, so Murphy would probably pay a visit, mess something up and make next week too hectic trying to do the job right  thanks for the help.

Actually, the race group stickers (at least those we get in SE) stick so well they can’t be removed. I just chose to cut out a small rectangle of the film in the corner so I can apply race group stickers direct to the glass.

As for Rain-X, good question, 'cause I’ve not tried it. Seems like it should still do what Rain-X does.
