New Guys to the SpecE30 Game

#1

Hey everyone, my name is Dan and I am with Domination Chassis.

We are looking to do a Spec E30 build for next year as we just acquired a 325e (for free).

As I have just recently found out, it looks like we’re going to need to do a few things with this guy before it’s eligible for Spec racing, so we’ll be having our eyes open for a Motor/ECU and such.

About us, we’re located outside of Pittsburgh, PA in Carnegie, and have been in business since 2003. We have worked on everything from NHRA spec cars to NASA Time Attack, American Iron, Bonneville Salt Flat cars and more. You can take a look at our work at http://www.dominationchassis.com

This will be our first shop car that will represent us on the track. Looking forward to getting out there and having some fun!

Welcome to SpecE30. Others may disagree, but I have heard enough horror stories about “e” to “i” swaps that the free car may end up costing more than an honest-to-goodness “i.” Little things like the correct LSD, air dam, aero-critical trunk lip  , etc. Sell the “e” for $400 and buy an “i” for $1000…

Since you are in PA, you need a good excuse for a road trip to Florida to pick up a rust-free chassis with crappy interior. Early spring break in September?

Whatever path you take, good luck with the build!!

'85 car = no abs and a host of wiring harness differences.

Even though the car was free, don’t waste your time and resources.

Find at least a '86 with abs and the round wiring connector.

I would recommend stripping it of all useful parts - fenders, hood, trailing arms, windshield, brakes, master cylinder, etc. and buy an “i” like mentioned above. I did the same, and after adding up the parts/time, was not worth the effort.

Thanks for the heads up guys. Looks like I might be looking for an I in the near future here and maybe we can just strip this one down.

Now I have found an Automatic Sedan close… will the “e” tranny bolt up to the m20 motor?

Yup. Should be the same Getrag 260 as the “i.” A word of caution: most automatics come with a 4.10 diff (ask me how I know) . The “e” probably has a 3.73 open diff. Neither is the correct piece for SE30.

I tend to propagate the old wives’ tale that former-automatic motors lived an easier life and make good race motors (if you aren’t going full-rebuild right from the start).

It may seem like a shame to strip the “e” car, but it is a great way to build knowledge and a spares package at the same time.

Here is my first take on making the SE30 in asseto corsa. Body is not ready, but everything else is pretty close. Let me know whatlove language test you guys think.I remember the day I saw the picture of the car and my first reaction before I found out it was real was that it was photoshopped.I could write many pages on this topic but hope that helps put things in perspective for you guys who asked about tracks in racing games.

Let me know what you guys spacebar clicker think.Spec E30, consisting of 1987-91 BMW 325i’s, is the 3rd largest race class in the nation. The class is intended to be a low-cost contest of driver skill,…We’re going to document a recent build I’ve just begun and let the world in on all the secrets of building a Spec E30 to race!
