new exhaust w/video

we are very pleased with how it came out, it’s all mandrel bent, and we kept the factory x-pipe but removed the cat.

Thanks for sharing!

NICE!!!

You didn’t like the Advance Auto Parts clamped on special???

I love the fact that you guys are taking the car to the next level.

We bought an awsome car from you. We didn’t need to do anything to the car except change the seat out and personalize it a little. The reason we went ahead and did the exhaust was becuase a couple of my buddies that own an import performance shop wanted to build us an exhaust and they gave me a great deal so we went ahead and did it. They were really impressed with the car and they deal with 400-500hp 4 cylinders on a daily basis. The funny thing about it is that the catalytic converter is worth enough money to pay for the exhaust.

P.S. just wondering what size is everyone else’s exhaust? Duals or not?

How much did you get for the cat and where did you sell it? I’m still tackling my exhaust redo but running into the problem of needing to keep my car street legal and not finding any shops to bend the rules and remove my cat.

I just sold mine on ebay for $68 plus shipping. Not bad for something most people would have left at the muffler shop.

I had a hell of a time finding someone to remove my cat out here in CA. One of the local race shops recommended a small muffler shop to me - I’d suggest utilizing word of mouth to see if anyone knows anyone in your area.

there are a couple of places down here that have no problem with removing the cat. I got a import performance shop to do our exhaust because my buddies own it and they cut us a deal.

I did not see the name of the shop. Where is he located? Why are glasspacks needed if a straight tube reduces restriction? I am interested in getting a set.

Thanks,

Roddy,

The shop was Millennium Autorsports, Norfolk VA. The mufflers are Moroso spiralflow race mufflers. I think the idea is that some backpressure is desired for optimal power output.; too big an exhaust pipe diameter without mufflers, and you get low end torque loss. Our exhaust is stepped from 2 in to about half way back to 2 1/4, then 2 1/2 at the mufflers. Seems to work OK

I will call them. Thank you.

Just FYI, your configuration is exactly the opposite of what I would expect. I used to work closely with a speed shop and we usually designed exhaust larger in the front and smaller in the back. The idea is that exhaust gases cool as they travel the exhaust, thus condensing and requiring less pipe diameter.

I will let you know how it comes out.

Thanks,

Since you can’t alter the stock down pipe, we had to step up the pipe size in order to fit the mufflers, so we just did it gradually.

be very careful selling cats in public, they can be sold for scrap only, selling a used cat on the open market is against federal law, I think the fine is 50k or something like that.

The theory behind our exhaust is that the exhaust gases accelerate as the pipe diameter increases. The spiral creates an exit venturi effect. It seems to work really well and we gained a considerable amount of hp with this set-up. My buddies shop also has a dyno-jet.

The design of Ed’s exhaust makes a lot of sense to me, plus you cannot argue with actually dyno results. My budget (and lack of friends who own muffler shops) forced me to go the cheap route: two 2" glass packs from Advance and gutting the cat. The total price came to $160 for parts and labor. My butt dyno says the low-end torque is comparable to stock or perhaps minimally diminished, but from about 4K up, the car pulls much harder. I think it’s ultimately well suited to track use where the revs are never low, and the sound is pretty great–making a small BMW sound menacing is fun. I’ll be happy with it until a dyno shows it to be bad or it’s the only thing left I can blame for losing.

Ed,

Can you tell me how much your exhaust costs. I called the shop you recommended and they gave me a price of over $600. I know racing isn’t cheap, but this seems to be almost double what most people are spending.

We spent about $300, but we know the guy. As Brain noted below, you should be able to get a nice exhaust for $300. Have you talked to Delta V Motorsports? They should be able to recommend someone in Richmond.

Best of luck. Ed
