NASA-SE Garage Cup

#1

Hello fellow NASA-SE racers! Please take a moment to look at the NASA-SE schedule for 2007:

Feb 10-11 CMP
Mar 16-18 Road Atlanta
Apr 14-15 Rockingham
May 19-20 Roebling
June 16-17 Rockingham
July 14-15 CMP
Aug 10-12 Road Atlanta
Sept 29-30 Roebling
Oct 13-14 Barber

From the above, you will note that there is a total of 9 events and 18 races. Standard NASA CCR rules state that season-ending 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places go to the racers that have accumulated the most points. Being realistic, Laura Patton, David Cullen, and I stand the best opportunity to accumulate points because we are required to be at every event. The CCR rules do allow you to drop 10% of the races (I’m guessing that would be 2) but to be competitive with those three people that will be at each event, you would need to attend at least 8 events/16 races. This is difficult to do.

Having said that a full schedule is difficult, we have found a sponsor that is willing to host a SpecE30 cup for the Southeast region similar to that of the 944 cup. We talked with Jim Pantas about this idea and have worked out the logistics to make this cup a reality. The six cup events will be:

March 16-18 Road Atlanta
May 19-20 Roebling
June 16-17 Rockingham
July 14-15 CMP
Aug 10-12 Road Atlanta
Oct 13-14 Barber

This is six events/12 races. Your final points tally for the SpecE30 Cup will be determined by your best 10 out of 12 races. If there is a tie the winner is the racer with the most total points. You will also note that the Southeast SpecE30 Cup includes at least one race at each track. The points will be scored using the same numerical system that is in effect for NASA-SE.

The trophy for Southeast SpecE30 Cup will mirrorl the trophy used for the 944 Cup. We envision the Southeast SpecE30 Cup series to run for many years, thus the trophy will come with a large name plate area where you can add names each year. The winner will be responsible for the cup until the following year’s trophy ceremony. The 2nd and 3rd place drivers will receive a plaque at the end of each year.

The SpecE30 cup should provide a fun outlet for those racers in the Southeast that will not be able to attend all NASA-SE events. So, for Southeast racers, you will have two opportunities to win "big cash prizes," hug lots of trophy girls (guys for Laura), and drinks lots of beer and SpecE30 Cup margaritas: the Southeast SpecE30 Cup and the NASA SE points program.

Sweet, excellent job Pattons and crew.

#3

That awesome. Just make sure the engraver spells my name right:woohoo:

#4

Let’s see… how do you spell Damien? L…A…U…R…A, get it? B) Get ready for Roebling Road. We’ll be ready to test and tune at CMP and bring it on at Road Atlanta.

Seriously speaking, we are excited that everyone seems to be on board. We’re glad you like the one event per track format with an extra Road Atlanta as a wild card. It will be a great season and I can’t wait to see everyone at CMP.

Talking to myself and feelin’ blue…The first season with spec e30 in the Southeast was lonely; the second season, still lonely; the third season saw 8 cars at some of the season’s final events. So we dreamed and schemed-up the Cup. That’s got a catchy ring to it.

We’ve heard from Skeen , Damion, Patton and Patton. How about other Southeast racers? Or, will the Cup idea take a while to catch on just like it did for Spec e30 participation numbers in the Southeast ? Talking to myself and feelin’ blue…

Or, maybe it is time for some smack-talk. Damion can you get the audience sturred up?

Regards, Robert Patton

I love the idea of the cup.

I’ll be at most of the races in the Southeast this year. I live about 40min North of Rockingham.

My only problem is that unless only three racers show up, I’ll never make the podium!!

Love the idea… I’ll probably miss at least one of the garage cup events for this season, but should be able to participate next year. The slush fund is a bit thin this year.

#8

cool idea, but why is it called a "Garage" Cup?
cheers,
bruce

#9

Bruce, cause it looks like the sponsor will be Geno’s Garage, a truck accessory shop. They are the ones that committed to do the awards.

A little background info: my wife owns Geno’s Garage, so my daughter and I spend lots of time helping the wife spend money on our hobby. Clever, eh?

Seriously, the Cup does give others a chance to compete as the daughter and I have to attend all of the SE races and, by default, will accumulate more points. We’re not neceesarily the best racers, so the Cup gives others a chance to kiss the trophy girl and bring home those big cash prizes.

Regards, Robert Patton

well then it should be called the Geno’s Garage Cup!
That is great to start a tradition.

I think the SE cup is a great idea. I just need to get my car in shape. Living in Georgia and having limited funds for racing makes it tough to travel too far. Thanks to all involved for organizing this and for Geno’s Garage for the sponsorship.

Don, I see that you are in Florida. Come on up and race with us at Roebling Road. Let me know if there are any build questions that you may have. Regards, Robert Patton

If you’ll look back at the beginning of this post you’ll see that the Geno’s Garage Cup is a concept that is less based on participation, more on the ability to post up-front finishes at a select number of events.

Acknowledging that championships are not only talent-based (racers throughout the southeast and at the Nationals will concede that Mike Skeen has the field covered ), but also based on preperation…well Mike Skeen had the entire package this year.

Damion and I was able to keep it somewhat interesting. Going into the Barber event, Mike had a 4 point lead over me, and 40 over Damion. Damion didn’t attend Rockingham which effected his 2-race drop.

Mike drove another flawless race and finished first at Barber. I made it in at 4, I Damion was 5. Skeen wins the Cup by 24 points.

Congratulations Mike Skeen!

Let’s hear it from the other Southeast racers telling Mike that we’re proud of his accomplishment.

Skeen is pretty good. When the Pumpkin Run results come out I think you’ll see him ahead of probably 20 cars that significantly more HP.

Way to go Mike, isn’t it time for you to try another series?

…kidding… we like having you around I guess.

And Skeen had my ECU, guess I can’t use that for an excuse.
