NASA-SE: Firecracker Run, Charlotte(CMS), July 2-3

#1

NASA-SE proudly presents the annual Firecracker Run at Charlotte Motor Speedway (CMS) in Harrisburg, NC on July 2-3, 2011. This will be a fun filled event that promises to exceed all previous levels of NASA-SE quality events. We will have our normal schedule starting on Friday and continuing through out the weekend. This event includes:

High Performance Driver’s Education (HPDE) - drivers of all makes and models of cars can sign up and begin at the novice level (HPDE 1) and work their way to advanced driving skills. All drivers start with classroom instruction as well as an in-car instructor to guide you to drive your car at the limits. All of this takes place with the safety of a racetrack under controlled conditions.

Time Trials (TT) - Drivers will compete for their fastest lap times and win all types of contingency money and prizes. The beauty of TT is the fact that you can do all of this with only your street car and a helmet!

Sprint Races - All of the standard NASA classes will be participating, 944Spec, SpecBoxter, American Iron(AI), Factory Five Racing (FFR), German Touring Series (GTS), Honda Challenge(HC), Performance Touring(PT), SpecE30, SpecMiata, Super Unlimited(SU), Super Touring(ST), etc. Cars will be split up into groups and the racing will be intense to watch and participate in!

in it to win it…

PS: If anyone wants to split a room, I have two at the hilton garden 2 miles from the track. Sean and I are staying in one, but Jay marks is canceling on the other. I think jason tower might be taking 1 bed but for $100 for the weekend you can split it with Tower Fri/Sat night. Email me if interested.

Going to be a hot one! Near 100 both days. Make sure your cooling system is working properly.

Also, Spec E30 sponsor ChemStation is offering a small gift to the top qualifier Saturday. And if I happen to be the at the front of the grid - highly unlikely - the second place car gets the gift.

'Looking forward to a great weekend of racing in the Southeast Region!

Carter Hunt
Spec E30 National Series Director

Hey Evan -
This sponsorship opportunity probably fits you a little better than the teeny bopper literature deal you have going:
http://chemstation.com/pages/odorcontrol.htm. For everyone’s sake in the Spec E30 paddock, I hope that ‘small gift’ is a free sample for Evan.

PS - Looking forward to seeing you again Carter! In all seriousness, thanks for all you do to support the series!!

I have a small gift for Steve. Remind me to give it to him at the SE30 drivers meeting. Thanks for helping with the BW stuff at RATL DeVinney.

Good times at Charlotte this past weekend. Congrats to Evan for the win on Saturday! If only I had charged my camera battery… :pinch:

I’ll try to post more later after the day job calms down. In the mean time, here’s my Sunday video. Vimeo Link

A huge thank you goes to MikeSkeen.com for his coaching this weekend and to Tower for the Traqmate data to study before the weekend. It was my first time at CMS so I was rather intimidated. Skeen got me up to speed quickly and was really adept at telling me what I needed to do and how to do it. Well worth every penny!! And I have to give a shout out to Ryan at OPM for diagnosing and patching my bent selector rod issue. If you were behind me in Turn 1 on Saturday during my numerous 5th–>2nd–>slide sideways–>3rd–>4th maneuvers, I apologize. 4th gear was located somewhere in the passenger seat. 5th was roughly located in the glove box.

#7

Oops - I forgot to thank the Palacios for the hose clamps and straight stock that Ryan used to splint the selector rod to prevent it from snapping. You guys are a class act!!

#8

You were quite fast when you managed to find the right gear!

my definition of sandbagging involves pouring a bag of sand in your valve cover

my definition of sandbagging involves pouring a bag of sand in your valve cover[/quote]Maybe that’s what held all the parts inside when I zinged it to 8,000 rpm on a sweet 4-3 shift on the back stretch. Between the 5-2 shifts on Saturday and a couple 4-3 “upshifts” on Sunday… Hope the motor ain’t hurt too bad.

Well, after seeing the incident from a few different videos, I think I owe Walsh at least a 50-60% of an apology. I’d still call it a racing incident considering the room I was given to work with but it does look a little ambitious on my part. Glad the damage wasn’t significant. Sorry David!

seemed strong enough at the end of the sun race

Hey Steve, is your seat loose? Saw it making a lot of L-R movement.

It looked like you came out of corners pretty hard, but just fizzled out on the top end… How’s your compression?

On another note, great videos! What camera are you using?

The movers have been packing my stuff for the past two days so I haven’t had time to upload videos, but I’l;l try tonight.

i’ll probably have compression and leakdown tested after i get my ass kicked at vir in two weeks.

camera is aiptek a-hd w/ sunpak wide angle lens. powered off the car so it never needs batteries or charging.

i’m pretty sure that what you’re seeing is chassis flex from the engine’s prodigious torque. however there’s a competing theory suggesting that power from the engine is sufficient to actually warp spacetime and create tiny wormholes in and around the passenger compartment, what looks like looseness is actually the seat and driver moving back and forth between alternate frames of reference in our reality.

could also be a loose bolt.

#20

The seat isn’t loose. It is mostly just fiberglass flex. The seat moves a bit due to the sliders it is mounted on, though.
