NASA Nationals 2012

Congratulations Anthony. Well Done.

Ryan - I second Anthony’s comment about big balls. I did not see the move at the start (cameras cut away for a second) but later in the race I did notice that you were throwing the car in to T1 harder than I think I ever could. Nice job.

Looking forward to videos in this thread.

Don

How does that guy get away with being right on your bumper at the start?

watching that video, the pass at the start by the white car through pit out was brilliant…wish i had thought of that shortcut…

I knew that was going to come up. First the lineup was wrong so I left room in from of me for the guys to correct it BUT the problem was I should not see the flag at all and when the cars came to a stop I did not want to move up. Second, that point on the track was slopes back and my car would roll backwards when I took my foot off the brake. I tried to anticipate the start by listening to the other cars and each time I let off the brakes I’d roll back some until I rested on the 14 cars bumper, so it was all my doing. If the flag was visible to all it wouldn’t have been a problem.

For future reference, I have it on good authority it is deemed illegal to use the pit exit.

#87

In that case, not so brilliant

Did he get penalized?

#89

As per above, he was DQd for the ECU, so not sure if they actually levied the penalty for the pass.

Do you have a reference for this? I have seen in a pro series where it was illegal, but hadn’t researched it with NASA. I didn’t think I would ever actually do it.

The RD.

#92

I specifically asked the NASA officials after I ran up on Simon during the first qualifying race. I was told that the pit out is a racing surface, just like the damn grass is a surface.

#93

I asked the same question at the 2008 nationals and got the same answer. Since there is a blend curb instead of a blend line people tend to think its off limits. I don’t know if there has ever been a race at VIR when multiple cars didn’t cross the blend line going into turn 1.

It only gets tricky when someone is starting from the pits, then there needs to be a martial to release that car after the field has passed the pit exit.

Lap times from this weekend were blazing…are those typical times for Mid-ohio, were conditions perfect, or has everyone gotten faster ( i know it rained last year so maybe lap times from thursday and friday last year were slow?

#95

Records were set in a lot of classes.

I was also told by the official to reference this, since my only other choices were to back out of throttle and being hit, or hit the guy in front of me…

27.4.3 Course Deviation
When a driver is forced to significantly deviate from the “normal” racing line as a direct result of body contact from another car. Voluntary deviation to avoid another incident in not considered “deviation” for the purposes of assessing fault.

I’d much rather avoid the contact and continue racing, but hell if that’s what NASA wants from now on, sure…

To defend my previous post, because of the track layout at Mid-O it will almost always create controversy to cross that blend curb. With that being said, I will always choose that route rather than hit the brakes and cause more headache or confusion to the people behind me. In this case you are choosing the safer of the options IMO. The last thing you want to see during a standing start is brake lights.

#98

That rule does apply, but you better have video evidence that you were making an avoidance maneuver.

#99

I’m sure someone else will post a video.

Not video of Ryan, but finally got the montage of the Thursday incident posted.
