N.C. Emissions Testing

#1

Somewhere, (might be R3V or E30Tech) I recall reading that North Carolina was dropping the emissions testing for non-OBD cars (which would include the early E30s) as of January 1, 2006… is that true?

If not, have any of you guys who live in the state and who’ve cut out the cat been able to pass the emissions test? I’d like to keep the car street-legal, if possible. (I think I’ve asked this before, in person, but can’t remember the answer.)

Dan,

I just got my '87 325is inspected in December and they told me as of Jan. 1 it wouldn’t have to pass emissions any more (I don’t know if the year was significant or just that I wasn’t OBD II). With a big grin, I said, "Great, then you’ll cut the cat out for me?" Unfortunately they won’t because they said if the car is street legal, thus requiring an annual safety inspection, any rigorous shop not sympathetic to racers is required to visually verify the presence of a cat. How this is part of the car’s safety equipment is beyond me, though. The damn MAN does anything he can to keep us down.

That’s fantastic news… I figure a pair of Cherry Bombs will act as stunt doubles for my cat.

We (Pennsylvania)just got emission testing in '03 which was allegedly patterened on NC’s(in fact, when the program was first sprung, I was initially demonstrating the procedure on an emissions workstation machine that still had NC software in it!). Non OBD-II cars have to have a visual inspection, where the components had to be verified as present and APPEAR to function. Of course, it all depends on what your definition of 'appear" is.

What you may be hearing from the inspection technician is an unwillingness to tamper with a convertor, because, even if it’s gutted it might possibly bear physical evidence of that, and it could be traced to him. We even/still get that from time to time on non-cat cars/trucks!

IF you can find another sympathetic guy to do the deed…but that would be wrong… :ermm:

Does NC have a milage waiver? Ours is 5000 miles!
