[quote=“Z3SpdDmn” post=56000]My car is currently down for the count…

This past weekend, at the BMWCCA Club Race School, I had a rather random failure. The mount for the ignition coil broke it’s 2 spot welds and it fell down. The positive terminal shorted on the exhaust manifold and fried the ignition wire between the round 101 harness connector on the firewall and the splice near the ignition, iteslf. We traced that and replaced the wire, but there is still a major draw on the system somewhere. We couldn’t find any other wires that had fused, though. It was a very frustrating (and cold) Saturday…

My car is at D-Craft Motorsports and I hope to have some news on it tomorrow. Fingers are crossed that it will be fixed by tomorrow and other items will get wrapped up in this week.

Well, it took much longer than expected, but the car is finally running!! It will be headed for alignment this afternoon and Denny will pick it up for me this evening!
See you guys there!

By the way, let’s all plan on having dinner Saturday night at KC’s Steakhouse! They are a huge supporter of Street Survival and just made a sizable donation that I’ll be picking up this weekend. The food is good and the bar is great and the owners are fantastic!

Thanks for a great weekend of racing!!! Mid Ohio was a blast to drive and I really enjoyed the weekend. For those of you that haven’t raced with the Great Lakes SE30 gang, you are missing out! They really do it right to include an awesome lunch spread for both days of racing.

Special thanks to Michael Osborne and his family for keeping our bellies full at the track at to Anthony Magagnoli for organizing the Saturday dinner outing!

Awesome weekend, might be a few days till I have the videos up.

I had a fun weekend as well. To bad my net fell down on the first lap after starting 4th. I really wanted to show everyone that I can race them clean in my first weekend of racing. My video of racing the mid-pack Spec Miata’s should be online by the weekend.

On a side note, I think my engine is slowly dying. I had super high oil temp and my shift points on the back straight where further down the track than the weekend before running with BMWCCA. Where were you guys shifting into 5th in Sunday’s race?

Denny, what was your oil temp on Sunday? I saw 195F on Saturday and 225F on Sunday. There is a coolant temperature point where DMEs pull timing. Perhaps your coolant temp exceedeed this point. I believe it’s around 205F. I’m not sure what coolant temp was, my Stack sending unit for coolant temp is broken, but my car felt just a little softer on the last few laps of the race as well.

#110

Oil temp was in the 250-260 range. Coolent was at 200deg. No oil cooler on the car and straight distilled water with no water wetter.

The biggest thing I noticed was I felt like I was getting out of the keyhole pretty well, better than on Saturday, but my shift point to 5th was after the startline on the backstraight and I was short shifting to try and keep the oil temp down. The weekend before when the track did not have as much grip I was shifting into 5th just before the start line. My times didn’t pickup on Sunday from Saturday and I felt like I was driving better on Sunday.

#111

I don’t think your oil or water temps are dangerous or causing the DME to pull timing. It was much hotter on Sunday; perhaps heat soak is causing slightly reduced power…

#112

I never know that the water temp could pull timing. That may explain why with my old engine I would complain about it loosing power half way through a race.

My temps on Sunday were rock solid 205* oil and 180* water

#113

That’s good oil and water temps.

By the way, congratulations to Anthony and Michael for each winning a race this weekend!

#114

BTW, I am measuring Oil Temp and Oil Pressure at the oil filter housing with a sandwich plate. Water Temp at thermostat housing. My Oil Pressure went down to 13 psi during one lap at one point on the track. Seemed to blip down to just above 20 during braking. This was just a short blip. average pressure was 58 psi. It may be sucking air I would guess. Going to try to run a quart over next time. I have never over filled.

Do you guys know where you shifted into 5th on the back straight?

With guys claiming they run 220-230 oil temps in the summer heat at Road Atlanta with no cooler, 260 on a 70 deg day seems to me that something is not right with my engine. I was even getting high oil temps during the morning qualifying session when the track was super slick and 45 deg outside.

I am going to try and get my hands on a leak down tester to try and see if the rings are bad or a valve is not seating properly. I would think if the rings where bad the combustion gasses would get into the crankcase, heating up the oil versus a main bearing or a valvetrain issue. In mean time I’ll do a compression test and check the oil for any evidence of fuel.

#116

I shift into 5th around 45 seconds after start finish on front straight. Looks like just past the kink and around back straight start finish.

#117

It was nice running with you guys on Saturday/Sunday. What a fun track to race on. A bit tricky when it’s wet. Thanks for the Sunday lunch. The food was yummy!

#118

Rob, you need to edit your video’s to have Osborne instead of Thorne. It was nice racing with you. Hate it when new guys come up and get so fast so quick. Nationals should be a load of fun.

#119

I just figured out that maybe that was intentional and I was a Thorn in you side?

#120

Ha. Sorry about that. We got back home super late and got my wires crossed. Updated.
