March Road Atlanta Results

Race results and stories for all those racers that were’t able to make it to RA.

Al Kritter had a bad rear wheel bearing.
I had a control arm mounting stud break (the 22mm stud that goes into the subframe) on the 241. Fixed that and then the wheel came off because I did not torque the wheel on (and Laura was driving the car). Talk about stupid…well please don’t.
Front subframe mounting bolt that holds the front sway bar on her car broke.
Others had mechanical problems too.

OK, I’ll start. Should have had my camera pointed backwards on Sunday. I spent most of the race holding off Damion and Kelly. Damion in particular would try a pass, it would almost but not quite work, then as a result he’d lose his position to Kelly. Rinse, wait a lap or two, repeat. I was enjoying them fighting with each other and was fortunate to keep them back at the finish.

A great time, and we even went the whole distance without a FCY…Hard to remember last time that happened.

EDIT: I just realized Patton’s post count is nearly double mine. For somebody who says he can’t type, the guy seems to have a lot to say

Honest, I can’t type more than 5wpm. That is why the post are so many in number, so little on content.

The first 18 minutes of the Sunday race till I lost it in turn 1 trying to go under a 944. Some great video of the middle pack up until then.

Sat. sucked! qualified terrible in 8th. I got a great start and moved up to 5th by turn 3. I was in a heated battle with Walsh and Lako for a lap or until I hit the rumble strips in 10A too hard. As soon as I did I knew immediately the fuel pump relay had been knocked loose. I had them zip tied before but think during the engine install they were removed and I didn;t double check. Anyway I spent 3 laps in the pits fixing it.

Sunday’s qualifying effort was far worse! 11th! I didn’t get a good or bad start but drove pretty well and if you watch Harness’s video you can see that myself, Kelly and Chuck had a battle royal! It was a lot of fun. We raced each other so hard that we had no chance of catching the top 3 cars but it was worth it.

Thanks to B. Digel for putting together a solid motor! Just gotta fix me now!

I was so focused on Kelly/Damion I never even realized you were right with them. That was a savvy move you put on Kelly between 6/7 but then you got hung out by the scrum at 10A immediately following. So, in T1 the rear stepped out? Nice work to avoid collecting the 944; it looked like he was right there with you.

I can’t get to editing my footage until next weekend but other than watching the Walsh/Lako insane battles (Sat/Sun were both pretty good shows) I don’t know there was a whole lot going on out the front of my car.

In a nutshell, I was slow. Very slow. And rusty. Saturday was awful, in part because the freshly shaved tires had absolutely no grip whatsoever and because I got punted by a Miata in the Esses during the race, which allowed the Lightning leader to pass me as the double yellow came out (or after the double yellow came out, in reality). Thanks to everyone who helped put my bumper and exhaust back on the car…

Sunday was a lot better. I put old tires on the car and they stuck like glue. I had some great battles in the back of the pack, which really helped me get some of my racing skills and confidence back. Most importantly, my last few laps of Sunday’s race were my fastest laps of the weekend, so I showed continuous improvement all weekend, which is what I was hoping for after a 19-month absence.

Thanks for the video -

That was some very cool stuff. About the 5:00 min mark when you were going through 7 and down the back straight I with Julio and Damion I had to back it up a few times to figure out what happened. I said to myself “where did Julio go?”. I could not tell that he was right there next to you, three wide. That must have been cool to see from the outside.

Then an off in 12 on the same lap - I would have crapped my pants at that point.

Good Stuff

Great weekend and fun times. Good to have Bill back (minus the excuses) and Michael joining us.

Thanks to Eric’s great coaching, I was able to pick up my game. Hopefully he can help me find more pace. He’s expensive but well worth the investment.

The racing was great and very close. The multi-row / multi-wide train down the back stretch on Sunday was epic. I promised Eric I wouldn’t hurt his car so I backed off from some very interesting moments.

Echoing Damion, BD builds solid motors, thanks again BD.

Had a good weekend and will have to write it up more (work is going nuts right now). Qualified well both days, took advantage of it on Saturday… not so much on Sunday. Had a blast battling Damion. Unfortuantely, my camera tilted up partway through so I lost most of it :frowning: Here is what I do have.

I’ve started using a google blog to keep track of what goes on with the car (kind of like a logbook) and have some additional details there: http://fpr168.blogspot.com/2012/03/pot-o-gold-rush.html

Can’t wait for Roebling! I have a bit of work to do with the car… the drivers side front wheel bearing started making some noise during Sunday’s race.

Robert

Where did the trailing arm come from?? Did the threaded end break off? Had that happen on a P928 at VIr as an instructor.

Why the DQ’s on Saturday??

Brandon Pantas was too light (duh, he weighs 70 lbs less than Jim).
I think Walsh was a pass under Yellow.

I looked the control arm over for the maker and couldn’t find a mark. The stud that passes through the front subframe (22mm bolt on top) broke about 1/2" below the end of the threads. Thankfully it was after a full course caution flag and we were just getting up to speed through the esses. Went into the gravel at T5.

Sundays Video: http://vimeo.com/38476922

Poor qualifying both days set me up for the most fun I have had on track to date. The midpack battle was filled with 2 and 3 wide racing, multiple passes and very clean racing considering how tight the group ran both days. Childress and Harness video was great to watch. While battling with Walsh, there was a lot going on behind us. I know it was not the fastest way to run but a blast to experience. Looking forward to Roebling and the IFU!!!

Some great looking racing there, close and incident free… Very nice… :woohoo:

#15

I have watched a little of those video’s I think that it shows that if you want to race, there is only one place and that is Spec e30

Here is Saturday’s race video with some interesting traffic management after the yellow.

Overall a very good weekend and learned what it’s like to drive without [strike]LF[/strike] RF rebound on Sunday as that stupid shock nut loosened itself up. Made for an interesting T3 and 10B as the tire just bounced off the curbing then skipped for a bit.

I wondered why Johan was fiddling with your (shock) nuts.

#18

Typo, you’re correct it was the RF. I’ve heard people trying to loctite those nuts and they still come loose, but only on the RF.

#19

I had some very funny (?) handleing characteristics at the Glen last fall - my last race for the season.
During winter prep I discovered my RF shock gland nut was completely backed off.

My car had felt like it was sitting down on the right rear during left hand corners. Does wonders for the corner weights.

Definitely added to the pre race check list.

You got punted in the S’s but managed to avoid a wall? Wow! You don’t see that every day.

How old were the tires that did better than the new tires? More than a year old I imagine? How were they stored?
