Looking for car

#1

Guys, the car we were going to use for my Spec E30 has a lot of rust so we are little worried about the condition of the car. Therefore I’m looking for another car. Does not need to be running but must be structurally sound. If you have any leads let me know.

Is it worth the trip to Atlanta? I can look at a four door '87 e car at $250 at a friend’s garage if you have an interest. Either way,I may purchase it for a parts car. Robert Patton 800-755-1715.

Hi Simon,
I have a car that I was just about to put on e-bay. It’s 325i that starts and runs well, but has many cosmetic flaws. The previous owner used it as a daily driver, until he had shifter problems. I fixed the shifter, but there’s a clunk in the driveshaft. It was missing 2 bolts that keep the tranny and the d/s together, and I think that the PO running it as such damaged the U-joints.

This car makes a better race-car candidate then a future daily driver. Minor rust - it’s obviously been driven in winters, but I’ve seen MUCH worse, like on Han’s racecar

I put pics up here:

My plan was to put in on e-bay with a buy-it-now of $850, and I’m happy to entertain offers.

I also have a 325e that I don’t have pics of. A friend has been storing at a body shop for the past 2 years, and I don’t honestly know what condition it’s in, but I’d be happy to sell that one for cheap. Alex and I had "borrowed" some body parts to fix Car #54 a little while back. Car WAS mechanically sound, but was not a looker.

I have a little html script file that I can send if you’d like. It makes it easier to search various craigslist cities and a few other sites where e30’s are typically sold .
cheers,
bruce

I’ve often wondered why Craigslist doesn’t enable searches across various sites. If you don’t mind, I’d love to have a copy of your search file too.

Thanks!

I decided to try to attach the file here so anybody can grab it.

Craigslist has stated they don’t want cross-city searches to be allowed because it would take away from the garage sale feel of the site. They have actively shut down sites that created an automated cross-city search capability. Without a user feedback system like ebay has it is harder to get comfortable with a remote seller. Craigslist is partially owned by ebay now, though …

The attached is a simple dynamic html script. You save it to some place on your disk and then just double click it to open with your web browser. I’ve only tried this with IE. Then it is just a matter of clicking on cities and reviewing the results.

The remainder of this message is for those that want to modify the script…

Down at the bottom of the page you will see "Current Query …" this is the string that is passed to the local craigslist search. Most of those words are items to exclude to cut down on the number of "hits" returned. You may want to open up the search by not excluding listings with some of those words - you can edit the script file with a simple text editor like Notepad or Wordpad (eliminate the ± in front of the word also). Don’t use something like Word to edit it because it will then include all kinds of crap in the file. While you’re looking at the page in your browser, you can also click View, Source to see the html contents.

I created this late last year and since then craigslist has added more cities. I recently updated the Colorado region ones because I was giving this script to a local spec e30 hopeful but I know there are cities that I haven’t added around the country. A line of text in the script to implement a city search looks like this:

To add a new city you (first make a copy of the script file)

  • search the script for the city adjacent to where you want to add the new city
  • copy and paste a line to then edit it
  • on craigslist.com, go to the new city’s site and make like you’re doing a search
  • look at the http://… string in the browser and find the city name (spokane in above example) and areaID=xx number. Edit the line that you just created with that info (city name in two places on the line). Pay attention to not removing any of the html punctuation.

I’m happy to help people if this seems like greek.
cheers,
bruce

Here is another one to try. It works pretty well if you heed the "warning" about trying to search all sites at once.
