Interesting VIR Weekend

#1

A few items to mention…

We swapped DMEs (aka ECU or brain) at the beginning of the weekend and while it worked just fine at two previous weekends, the Beertech car had a problem with the DME.

I was told by that DME owner, after the weekend, that his DME “idles a little rough but runs fine in my car” and I don’t doubt his word. And before the race, no one knew how the DME’s would be distributed so there was definitely no bad intention.

And after the Beertech crew made some changes, the last word I got from them was that “it’s not the DME” so I though everything was fine. They had driven the car around the paddock and all seemed well. However, in the race, the problems appeared again.

Therefore, for the Sunday sprint, I told the racers to go back to their own DME and the Beertech car finished first, due to some very good driving for sure, but also due to an engine that ran properly. The car owner - JP - was understandably disappointed with the Saturday issues but agreed that the intention of the program is good. Plus, every other racer had no issues.

We are working with the other Spec E30 Series Directors in each Region to design a program that works better, although it wasn’t a problem on two other occasions. Regardless, one problem is too many so we will review the program.

It was suggested that we have about five good DMEs, and that we pull five names from a hat for each weekend and issue the DMEs to those drivers. Obviously, it is easy to cheat with the DME so we need some kind of program that will let the racers know that they might not get to use their DME for the weekend, to discourage cheating. Thoughts from the group?

On another note, from my perspective, I got to experience a full range of emotions.

On Saturday, the car was good but I was stuck in traffic for the entire qualifying session and ended-up 8th on the grid. Bad.

Due to a punt that happened at the front of the pack, and some solid driving, I finished 4th of the 22 cars. Good.

On Sunday, we were gridded in the same positions as Saturday so I started 8th again. Bad.

During the Sunday sprint race, the car was better than it had been on Saturday but due to some driving mistakes and some bad luck, I finished 9th, I think. Bad.

During the Sunday three-hour enduro, we were second in the E2 class and 6th of about 30 cars overall. During the race, James Clay of BimmerWorld World Challenge fame and I ran about 10 laps, nose-to-tail and with me leading. Good.

Then, he out braked me at turn one and got by. Bad.

I was able to stay with him for several laps. Good.

I then went four-off and he got about 7 seconds away. Bad.

I was able to keep the interval at about 7 seconds until he went into the pit. Good.

A few laps later, and with a few drops hitting the windshield, my car started starving for fuel so I pitted and handed the car to Carlton. He did a great job in miserable conditions (the unexpected rain continued to the end) and we finished first in class and second overall, to an E36 M3.

I want to thank all the Spec E30 racers for a great weekend. While a few of us had some ups and downs, it was basically a clean and fun weekend.

I hope to see everyone again at VIR in March.

I had a rough weekend that started out with me and carlton getting together in saturdays race in turn one. It was my fault and I made that very clear in the the post race dicussion and hope carlton will not hold it against me for too long. It was simple case of braking to late and no ABS. Unfortunately it ruined Carlton’s race. I am no longer going to try and race without ABS! So here starts the diagnosing. After that incident I was either 5th or 6th and was working to make a pass on skip when my outside fuel pump took a crap on me.

Sunday’s race I started 7th again and had what I thought was a clean start but from my video it looks like I might have been bumped from behind? My car just snapped sideways in turn one as if someone tagged me. Anyways not sure what happened there but I saw randy muller fly by me and then carter and I was in something like 10th place and managed to get by Vic and had some great racing with carter and vic until my gas pedal broke in half. Not good. I couldn’t heal toe as the pedal was just flopping around and vic mananged to re-pass me because of it. I think I finished 9th but i’m not sure.

So not such a great weekend for me…

P.S. Carter I thought I was gonna get you on the last lap at Hogpen! And the DME was not the reason my car would not go over 105mph it was the outside fuel pump and filter.

Well, the view from the back of the pack was pretty wild on Sun. They were 4 wide going into turn 1, someone’s front bumper cover went flying to the inside, someone else was off racing in the dirt on the outside, and I was trying to figure out this thing called racing, what a blast! I “drank from the fire hose” and learned alot. 1st, anti-freeze will not come off of a windshield with just the wipers. 2nd, it’s better to accelerate when the green flag drops than it is to be letting off the gas. And 3rd, I wanna Do It Again :woohoo:

Here’s my report. I qualified LAST, behind a 318! :frowning: Knowing there was nowhere to go but up, I set my sights high and was gunning for Skeen. He must have been scared, though, because he never showed himself to me at the back of the pack.

On Sunday I had a better start and actually moved up amidst some other SpecE30’s. That put the fire under my butt and I hung in there to actually make a race of it. Man, it’s fun when you have a battle like I did with Kappy instead of being hung out to dry all alone at the back. All my other races were like DE’s, except there was the added danger of getting a 500 horsepower enema from another class. I think I’m finally hooked on racing!

Good weekend,
Sasha

It wouldn’t have surprised me one bit. Sunday’s sprint race was the worst performance I’ve had in a long time. I was a bit unlucky and I made a few mistakes/bad decisions. A bad start, every hole closed as I got there, crowded off the track, etc. I enjoyed racing with you, Skip, , Brandon, and Vic, and we stayed fairly close to the leaders; but it just wasn’t my day.

I was able to get into the high 18’s during the weekend but couldn’t get it together for the Sunday race.

But that’s one thing that keeps it interesting.

I had a pretty good weekend, but the qualifying on Saturday basically ruined my chances. According to data, I had a low-19 going until Oak tree when I got caught in traffic; ended up turning a 21 (6th place). It was pretty much luck of the draw getting a lap in with all the traffic. That and we kept the spot for Sunday. Both days I had a less-than-stellar start getting stuck on the outside in T1. Fought back to 5th on Sat and 3rd on Sunday.

Hopefully things will go better in March running in the “normal” race group.

After waking up on Friday morning with 7 inches of snow on the ground, I almost didn’t leave. Luckily, I decided to give it a try and I’m glad I did. Was a real fun weekend as always. I didn’t qualify all that well, but sometimes that just makes things more interesting. In the end, I finished right behind Al in both races. Sunday’s race was close at the end, almost got past him, but couldn’t quite make it.
The trip home was almost as exciting as the race, some pickup decided to breakdown and stop in the middle of the highway a few cars ahead of me and everyone slammed on the brakes. Got the van and trailer stopped a few inches behind the bumper of a new Benz
Definitely coming back down next month, the track is just too much fun.

Although I wasn’t racing, I finally got to watch you guys run, which helped me realize I bought the right class car! Looked like it was pretty busy out there.

Thanks Carter for letting me use your tools!

Alex.

Sounds like a wild trip! Good to know you survived the weekend.

Very nice videos too. I really like the way you have your camera setup.

What angle/size is the lens?
How far behind the drive is the camera?

Thanks

Thanks. I think this is the newer version of the lens I’m using (I have the DVR-5000, which isn’t listed anymore) http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/472691-REG/Raynox_DVR5002_DVR_5002_Super_Wideangle_Converter.html It’s .5X wideangle. I’m using the I/O port camera mount and the bar is maybe 6" behind me.

Hope that helps.
