Infineon Race Report

BMWCCA Club Race Report (Weekend of 9/9-10)
Infineon (Sears Point) Raceway

This was my rookie race weekend and it was an absolute blast. Other SpecE30 guys in attendance were Steve D., Cole G., and Lee P. Cole and Lee rented Mike Mills’ 325 and 318. Joe S. had to cancel at the last minute which was too bad.

I have a lot of seat time at this track, but it was my first time running with all the SpecE30 goodies so I had to get used to all the downgrades. Saturday morning practice went off without a hitch. I got myself reaquainted with the car and the track and was putting down 2:00 laptimes. Steve, having only been on this track once, put up impressive times in the 2:05’s. Cole and Lee matched each other with 2:09’s which is quite good considering they have virtually no seat time in an E30 (coming from E36 M3’s).

Saturday qualifying was pretty much the same as practice.

Saturday race was pretty boring for me. I couldn’t quite keep pace with the tail end of the J-stock group in front of me so I was out there by myself. Steve was running by himself as well. The highlight was the fierce battle Lee and Cole were having at the back. They were consistently matching each other in laptimes which resulted in a crazy photo finish where Cole outpowered Lee’s 318 on the front straight to overtake him at the finish line.

Sunday was more interesting for me. The track was driving a little better in morning practice, but my tire pressures were a hair off and I couldn’t better my Saturday times. Steve improved into the 2:02’s and I think Cole improved as well. Lee, having made no improvement, rented my spare set of Toyo’s to replace his Yoko’s in his quest to exact revenge on Cole for the previous day’s heartbreak.

Sunday qualifying went well and I dipped into the 1:59’s and outqualified the two J-stock E30 M3’s that I couldn’t keep up with on Saturday. I think Steve qualified with a 2:02 and Cole with 2:05 and Lee improved to a 2:07 on my Toyo’s.

The race went extremely well for me. I sought out advice from some of the veteran guys and worked on a race plan to hold off the 2 J-stock cars. Having the advantage of in-car radio proved to be the deciding factor as I was able to hold my position on the start by getting a jump on the guys behind me since we can’t see the starter tower from that far back in the
field when the green gets dropped. The two J-stock guys were back there battling it out for a few laps and it bought me a little bit of breathing room. They eventually started closing the gap to me. Each lap, I noticed I carried a lot more speed than them going through the esses. This opened up just enough breathing room to putt-putt my way down the back and front straights and get back into the twisty haven of the hills. The gap closed enough on one lap and one of them got a little run on me coming out of the carousel, but I was able to defend my position. After that, I opened up the lead just a little bit and that’s when the front runners were coming around to lap us. My radio guy did a good job of helping me manage the traffic situation and I didn’t get slowed up as much as the guys behind me. I
finished .8 and 1.4 seconds in front of the two JS guys.

The other 3 SpecE30 guys were back there driving all alone. Steve managed to set a fast time of 2:00 which is really awesome for only his second time at the track. Cole and Lee managed to improve their times to 2:05. It was a very good weekend for all of us.

thanks for the fun report. Why did you run in DM Lance? (saw on mylaps.com)

I was at the track on Sat, and it was fun to watch E30s race. While Lance and Steve checked-out, two other E30s had a fun fighting it out (as Lance noted in his write-up). It was also good to meet Steve and put-face-to-the-name. Lance I tried to find you after the race – found the car in the garage but you were probably at the BBQ.
Watching the race definitely gave me more motivation to hurry-up and finish my car (at one of the Sears Point shops I was also able to test fit a race seat I am planning to buy, so that’s one step towards the goal)

Hahaha. I must have answered this a dozen times during the weekend. What are the 2 mods allowed in SpecE30 that would put you in DM? Lightweight battery, and adjustable FPR. Since SpecE30 will be a recognized class in BMWCR next year, I didn’t want to bother making the car KP legal for the 2 remaining races I plan to run this year.

Another interesting thing is I got a run on Steve coming out of the carousel during practice and was initially gaining on him and towards the end of the straight, I wasn’t gaining on him anymore. My motor is probably down a few horses.

actually there are quite a few things that might put a spec e30 into DM this year but allowed in "E30/KP" next year.

Hmmm, actually I can’t find any provisions in the BMWCR rules that allow for removal of cruise control or power steering in any of the classes. Does that mean a fully-built SE30 can’t have a BMWCR classification? Not like it matters come next year.

So, in addition to the battery and AFPR, I also hav no power steering and I cannibalized the cruise control throttle cable to make a pull cable for external electrical kill.

Lance - thanks for the write-up. It was great meeting you, Cole, Lee, and Igor.

Infineon is a great track. However, being so technical it’s difficult to walk on & drive it well (how Scott Riley flew in from Texas & took over the IP field I have no idea!). Anyway, the first practice session I was pretty much back where I’d left off on my first & only previous time on this track in the 2:05’s. I could tell, though, that my car was handling much, much better than it did a year ago - I guess some of that tweaking & fiddling did help after all! I managed to get down to 2:02.9 in the Saturday race, but I left the track a bit disappointed that I was still 2.5 seconds behind Lance. Off to the hotel to watch some videos to see just how bad my lines were / where I could make up some time…

Well, though the video session helped a bit as I shaved off 3/10th by Sunday qualifying Lance also dropped some time overnight, putting him in the 1:59’s! STILL 2.5 seconds behind him! Aargh! 30 minutes before the race I decided to yank the passenger seat out of my car to see if THAT was causing the difference.

At the start of the race I was gridded behind Lance & two JS cars. Thanks to my spotter giving me the green flag call, I was able to get around one of the JS cars (actually, almost both of them) coming up the hill into turn 2, but lost the position back entering turn 7. This was where it got fun. Much to my surprise, I was able to hang right with Lance & the 2 JS cars for the first 4 laps! My spotter came over the radio with "great job…your hanging with them!", to which I replied "yeah, but it’s frightening me just a little!". Then the fun ended coming around the carousel on lap 5. I was trying to carry a bit too much speed in attempt to pick up some distance I’d lost, got totally sideways on exit, and fishtailed 3/4 the way down the following straight. After that, I figured the 3 cars I’d been chasing were now too far ahead for me to conceivably catch and the other spec cars were not in my mirrors, so I backed it down a bit to finish the race at a more relaxed pace.

I’ve very happy to say that in the first quasi-spec e30 race on the west coast we had a total of 0 mechanical problems, 0 on-track incidents, and 0 problems (that I heard of, anyway) interfering with faster traffic. Everyone did very well - and Lance is damn fast on this track! I’m looking forward to trying to chase him around Infineon again!

Could be the added aero drag on your car as well…

in the draft of the 2007 rules, there is a new section in Modified that says steering is free. and there is:

  1. Engine
    A. Must retain a BMW OEM engine block and head. Schnitzer heads are
allowed on M10 engines. All other changes, relocations, substitutions,
    alterations and modifications are free.

Power steering is needed if you want to run the car with SCCA in ITS.
