$hit. I just blew my differential

#1

!#!@*&%#!!! I blew my diff at CMP today. Who has a line on a limited slip diff within a couple states of GA? I figure that I need to get it by Tuesday in order to be ready to race on Friday.

And can you remind me how to to conclusively identify the LSD diff vs. non LSD?

#2

If it has a tag, it will say “S3.73”

There’s also an S printed on the top sometimes, but that’s usually too dirty.

Also, if you spin an output shaft and the other turns the same direction, it’s LSD. If they spin opposite directions, open.

Hit up Al Taylor, Molitor Motorsports, or Geno’s Garage (E30 parts hording dept.).

If you can’t get in before the weekend, bring it and we’ll put it in at the track. Its not a very difficult job.

JP, that is goddamn cool of you to suggest, but I’ll move heaven and earth to get it done prior. When I’m desparate, I’ll take as much charity as the next guy, but the idea of inconveniencing others on my behalf makes me cringe.

With some luck I can get my shop to confirm on Monday that it is the diff and then I’ll roadtrip out on Tuesday to whoever sells me the diff.

#5

What happens when it blows? Quits driving? Noise?

#6

Drives ok but noise and vibration is bad. Noise sounds like a growling or low pitched grinding. It is not subtle. Occurs in both forward and reverse. It get worse both with load and with speed.

#7

Could be a wheel bearing.

That would be a kindness. I’ve got spares of those. But lady luck kicks my ass more often then she squares me away.

Like JP said, if push comes to shove bring it too the track, we can swap that out for you in about 45 mins start to finish.

Unfortunately, I have had more than my fair share of having the rear ends of E30’s and E28’s to take apart and put back together.

#10

Let me know if you cannot find one locally, I can bring to the track.

 sorry, Scott. I just couldn’t resist myself.

All kidding aside. Save all your gas and driving around for the track. Bring the car and we’ll do it at the track.

#12

Scott - if you suspect it is a wheel bearing, that is not a job you can do at the track. I am doing mine now, and it is a lengthy, special tools job. As others have noted, changing the diff is easy.

I thought my problem was the diff as well after I finished a practice session at Pocono a few weeks ago, but others noted having noise in their diff periodically. We narrowed it down to wheel bearings by loading the car side-to-side.

With the offers to help Scott drop in the differential, I can say that this is a great bunch of racers to be associated with.

See you at the track. Robert (notice I didn’t offer to help, cheerleading is my specialty) Patton.

re: Cheerleading… Bull. Robert, you are the king of helping out us unfortunates! (I’ve lost count of how many weekends, DE & race, you and Chuck have saved for me.)

#15

Fred, thanks for the kind comments. But, on this one I’m taking a back seat and letting others do the work. With the big picture being that we are all pitching in to help the other fishermen fish, it is a great thing to observe. And you’re right about Chuck Taylor, so buy some parts from him so we’ll have him around at the races. And you’re right about the other Spec E30 racers. Look at the previous posts and note their willingness to help out. See you at the lake this weekend.

Regards, Robert Patton

Turned out that my 3 month old guibo shredded itself. And that took out the vibration damper. Early truth is that the diff is ok, so I’ll end up with a spare.

Am grateful for all the offers of assistance. Friday evening I’ll be in the paddock with a cooler full of ice cold 12oz gratitude.

#17

Scott, check your center support bearing while you’re down there.

Also remove that vibration dampner dealio.

#18

An FYI to ALL Spec E30 racers, if you do have a wheel bearing failure we can do it at the track!

I happen to have the special tools required and I bring them with me to the track.

BTW, JP>>>>>>> Bring the booklet for the tool to CMP please. Thx.

#19

Brian - you are a better man than me. I would not want to do a rear wheel bearing replacement at the track. Both of my hubs had the outer race stay on the hub and had to have them removed at a machine shop. Hope you are at the track when I have a failure!

Checking in late, but WOW!! Scott, where do you find this stuff?
