$hit. I just blew my differential
Turned out that my 3 month old guibo shredded itself. And that took out the vibration damper. Early truth is that the diff is ok, so I’ll end up with a spare.

Am grateful for all the offers of assistance. Friday evening I’ll be in the paddock with a cooler full of ice cold 12oz gratitude.
Scott,

Any idea as to why a new guibo would fail so soon?

#22

Been trying to understand that myself. If this next one fails prematurely then I guess I’ll be looking for some underlying cause that is putting too much stress on the guibo.

#23

Top of mind guesses on early failure of guibo:

Imbalance in driveshaft
Worn center bearing allowing excess movement of driveshaft
Guibo installed backwards

Echo the previous comment about the vibration damper. Get rid of it. Will need to source 3 extra bolts to replace the “studs” that are part of the damper.

Edit: Guibo doesn’t have a front or back, but the arrows are important to align them pointing towards a mounting flange.

In addition to what Chuck mentioned as causes of early guibo failure, binding u-joints in the drive shaft are a possibility.

Psshh, I wish just my diff blew. Instead, the diff mount cracked the unibody rail and is separating the unibody from the trunk floor!!! Can’t wait to fix this!!

#26

Dang.

You win.

C’mon Stu. That’s what happens when you throw in a big motor and beat the piss out of a car.

#28

That looks like “son of e12”…Skeen ya know what I am talking about?

Stu - When did you get an MCoupe? :stuck_out_tongue:

About time to scrap that chassis…

If you’re referring to the floor of a white e12 tearing apart, then yes, I’m familiar with such occurrences.

#31

I’m sure you can get a guibo easy enough, but if not I have a spare new one. See you Friday.

Skeen–
Yea, I guess it is to be expected. The chassis has about 340,000 miles on it now and it hasn’t exactly been driven lightly since I’ve owned it (2002).

JP–
I figured someone would pull the Mcoupe comment. I’m going to put the car in the air tonight, pull the diff, strip the undercoating in that area and a local friend is going to weld the creases and put a reinforcement plate back there to triangulate the area. Bassen apparently had the same thing happen in his euro S50 E30 M3.

If it were a low-mileage, long term car I’d do the E36 ‘twin ear’ rear diff cover, but I just need a quick fix to hold up for a year or so, then I’m going to scrap it and find a nice white/silver 318is to drive. The stiff suspension is going to come off and I definately won’t be tracking the car again.

Hope you guys have a great time at CMP this weekend, as always I’ll be looking forward to the race reports!!
